This is how it goes....

I go from a 56k win modem to a 56k internal hardware modem and go from 1000+ ping to 170+ ping. Today my uncle says he has a 56k v.90 external Us Robotics modem  I can have, it\'s totally brand new and pretty expensive, I was wondering if this will help lower my ping and up my download speeds? I\'m not really up on modems but I\'m sure someone is *points at mm*

It depends.. if your current modem is seriel port connected external then yeah it\'ll help slightly.. probly not enough to notice. Definately not enough to notice if you\'re using a USB external modem.

The biggest difference between the two is that the external one clutters up your desk while the internal modem makes everything nice and neat by including it in the package.. and IMO Internal components are always best unless you\'re absolutely starving for a free PCI or ISA slot. (Does your PC even HAVE ISA slots???)

Anyhow, I\'m not too hip to the new modem lingo either.. as far as I\'m concerened there\'s pretty much no difference between a V.90, V.90+, Flex, ect... it\'s all just gimicks to sell something "new" because they can\'t increase the speed of analog modems anymore due to restrictions set by the FCC. (AFAIK) You certainly won\'t notice a difference anyhow.

Indeed.. but he said anywhere from 170 to 1000.. which leads me to believe that his average ping is on par with what you normally find 56ker\'s at.. hovering somewhere between 275 and 400.

My advice to you is to just try and only use it late at night when there\'s not much telephone chatter and other interferance clogging up the lines. There\'s not much you can do about anything else aside from upgrading the telephone wiring in your house.. which I doubt is a problem anyhow if you\'re even comming anywhere NEAR 170 ping at ALL.

Just a minor correction... when he had his external modem he was getting 1000+ ping, when he went to an internal it dropped to 150ish. ;)


Anyway, I agree with everyone else.  Stick with the modem you have now.

Then there was obviously a problem with his older external modem as there is absolutely no reason for that kind of a ping improvement simply by switching between an internal and external modem.

Only difference between the 2 is that. External modems use there own powersource. So u can connect more then 1 comp to it without having the host machine on.
External modems take up room, Use the IRQ address of the port there on. They don\'t use up a PCI IRQ or PCI Slot like internals do. But PCI IRQs can be shared anyways.

Well, I\'ve been using it today and it is better, I was playing CS online with a solid 170 - 200 ping, pages open alot faster and download speeds have improved, booyeah!.
