Overload or Short?
« on: December 19, 2002, 11:18:54 PM »
Well, This is what\'s happening. My 300w Ritmo Power Supply fried. (Crappy stock PSU that came with my case) So I took it back and got it replaced under warranty. The new 300w Ritmo power supply fried after 10 minutes. The wholesaler that I’ve brought all my stuff from (didn’t get my graphics card from them) thinks that the machine is shorting somewhere and it’s being tested. I think that the 300w power supply can\'t take all the shit inside my comp. I personally think that I’ve been close too the 300w limit and once I got the new mb it took it over the threshold.
I have inside my machine
3 case fans.
GA-7VAXP MB + Northbridge Fan
XP 1800+ CPU
GF4 Ti4400 AGP Card
3 PCI Cards
2 Cathodes with 2 inverters
Hard drive
Floppy and CDROM

So I’ve brought a 400w Just Cooler PSU, It\'s not the best but it\'s not the worst either.   Review here  (300watt review though)

What do u guys think? a short somewhere or needed a bigger PSU?

and no mm, it\'s not user error...

i think your psu was too small if it was a short it should have shorted instantly not after ten mins 400w should just be an industy minimum by now but comp companies are too cheap

I\'ve ordered a 400w psu not 300w.. The review just shows how the 300 watt one works. It looks the same as the 400w psu, but i couldn\'t find a review on it. too new i guess.  :)

lol. My case sucks for airflow. Need 3 fans to get air into it. Well... only really need 2. But I’ll just use the front one anyways. I have one on the side panel, one at the front and one at the back. I\'m thinking of redoing the Perspex window and making it round. Cutting out 2 holes in it for 2 fans etc. It\'s a hobby more then a need.  My cpu sits around 43c gets to 49c max. That’s with the STOCK Sink too.

Whats your cpu run at, mm? Temp wise

I wanna upgrade my MB/CPU really soon, but I\'m still not sure on what processor to get.  I\'m leaning a little towards intel, mainly because I don\'t want to put 30 fans in my case just to keep the amd cool...

Ouch? The thermal threshold for Xps is 90c. AMD say its 120c.  I hardly call it ouch. It\'s also SUMMER here mm. 38c days etc. Main reason why my pc is getting a little warm is because it\'s in a pc desk that has crappy air circulation around it. My case being crappy doesn\'t help either...
Even the INTEL pc I’m on now is getting quite warm.
Anyways I won\'t get back my comp till the 6th. :( They couldn\'t get the PSU and put a shitty one in it. I told them just to keep the pc till they get the proper one and then I’ll pick it up.

Nataku. If you get a new mb/cpu and u do get amd. You\'ll only need probably 2 fans MAX to keep it cool. You can always use a Intel processor, not have any fans besides the sink and be scratching your head wondering why your pc is slowing down ;) Your case probably already has a fan on the back. Unless it\'s an AT case. Then you\'ll need a new case anyway.  Like I said. Only reason why I have more then 2 fans is because it\'s a hobby. :)

mm, what\'s the hottest your area gets in summer?

thats the threshhold when it burns out and dies, no?

my lian li case is 78F (26C) ambient temp right now
my apartment stays 72-76F at all times

if i play quake3 for a few hours, it goes up a degree or two and thats it.

check yer temps again souly, 49C is yer case ambient temp

my case has three fans
one in the power supply (standard)
one on the cpu (standard)
one on my Gf4 (standard)

my friends AMD rig sounds like a frikn turbine when its on, he has to turn it off so he can sleep in the same room, it ridiculous

Yea 90c is the burn and pop threshold. AMD say it\'s 120c. but i don\'t believe em.  The 43c is the cpu temp, It gets to 49 after playing games (that\'s in summer)  in winter it tends to stay around 34 and gets up to 40c etc.
My case has 3 fans..
1 at the front (added)
1 at the back (stock)
1 on the case panel. (added)
2 fans on my GF4   (stock)
1 fan on the PSU (stock)
1 on the cpu (Stock)
1 on the northbridge fan on the mb.. (Stock)
but it\'s not loud. I have crappy fans.. They run around 2200rpm, Not high at all. So i can sleep  with the comp in my room..
I\'m planning on getting silent coolmod fans. They run around 6000rpm and are very quiet. So i\'ve been told..... i doubt it though
The computer i\'m on now is a intel machine. Has 2 case fans, the cpu fan, PSU fan and Geforce fan.

In all it\'s simple. If your comp doesn\'t freeze, reset or do anything wierd resulted from overheating. It doesn\'t really matter how hot it gets, as long as it doesn\'t fry etc.  I don\'t need 3 case fans. 1 would be plenty. Most of the heat comes from my PSU. I\'ve been pushing it for 5 months. The new mb took it over.. :(

I got a 340W PSU.
I wanted to get a bigger one cuz I was not sure if it would work. Thankfully I\'ve had no problems with it so far.

CPU temp on my XP1900+ is about 42-45 idle and 49 when Im playing games.

Pretty normal temps for AMD XP processors I guess.

I bet I could get it down a few degrees if I used Arctic Silver on the Sink instead of that wax shit they use.

thinking of getting a new mobo and cpu soon... but hmmm, don\'t know if I should go for an AMD or for Intel.
I have a Thunderbird 900 now and it gets bloody hot. Was like 80 degrees celcius when I ran some matlab simulations, and I don\'t like that temperature very much :/
