Well, I was digging through the forum and came across your post. Here\'s my two cents.
I have the japanese PS2 and the HDD/Network Adapter combo things (PS2BB) Anyhoo, I\'ve taken the entire thing apart (I have the external one) and it too is simply an IDE HDD in a casing that is connected to a PCMIA? card that also includes an ethernet port.
Anyhoo, I\'ve done a lot of things. I\'ve tried taking out the HDD and replacing it with a brand new unformatted HDD. The problem is, however, the installation disc will not recognize the HDD, and will not allow me to format it.
I\'ve tried connecting the PS2 HDD to my computer, yet my computer cannot read from the partitions on the HDD. I\'ve tried both under Linux and Windows. Basically, the thoughts that I\'m coming at is that perhaps the PS2 HDD is given its own partitioning format, and probably comes pre-partitioned before shipment, otherwise the installation disk should\'ve been able to partition/format the new HDD that I stuck in there.
Other than that, maybe they switched a pin or two, or something.. I dunno. I really doubt they switched any pins, because there are a lot of japanese pages out there talking of people adding an IDE CD-ROM drive to their PS2 because the PS2 CD-ROM drive doesn\'t read anything other that PS2 disks. it\'s been done, and I know it\'s possible to do so. I\'ve looked everywhere for info on the PS2 HDD partition/format method and stuff, but I didn\'t come across anything yet... and then I figured.. why the heck would I even want to do all that? Afterwards, I just put everything back together, and enjoyed playing my games =X
If I had the Linux Kit for the PS2, I\'d probably have more ideas as to what\'s going on, but since I don\'t, that\'s all I can say. Besides... why the heck would you want to hook up a HDD to your PS2 when there\' s absolutely nothing advantageous from doing that at this point in the US or the UK?
