The problem that everyone is facing is something that directly associated with the laser. A lot of times the laser can be adjusted to overcome this issue.
There are a bunch of nice FAQs out there about adjusting the lens, but honestly I wouldn\'t recommend doing it.. you\'ll probably just make things worse. The other method I would really really suggest would be to got to lik-sang and order the replacement laser lens that they sell. Just replace that part of the ps2, and everything will work fine. I did that with my first gen ps2 (jpn) and it still works perfectly fine.
Oh yeah, and simply rubbing the lens with rubbing alcohol will not fix the problem, and a lot of times simply make everything worse. If you ever come across a broken ps2, try taking the entire laser structure apart. You\'ll find two lenses inside: the one that you see from the top, and another plastic one inside. The plastic one scratches easily (i did this) and frankly gets dusty easily too. Yet it\'s deep inside so that no duster could blow anything out. There\'s also a little prism inside to bend the laser. This was made out of glass and did not scratch that easily.
In other words, there\'s a lot of little pieces in there that can easily get dusty and scratched, and no lens cleaner nor duster, nor rubbing alcohol would really take all of it off. Adjusting the laser as stated above will help the situation for a time being, but would eventually end up with the same situation because all you\'ll be doing is increasing the laser until it burns out.
