It always ends up with a number in a diagonal row through the middle of the board.  The picture in that row changes, but the thing will always pick the picture from that row.

yes... but also.... any two digit number subtracted by its two digits is a multiple of 9.... 9,18,27..etc... so that whole diagonal row are multiples of 9.
