Can animals think?
« on: February 20, 2003, 07:40:41 PM »
I learned last year that people believe that we are the only animals that think. I\'ve been waiting to bring this out. So what do you think? Can animals think? Discuss.

Yep, they can.

A few days ago, I was bored like hell. It\'s like when you walk up to a bird eating, it flies away, because it KNOWS that you\'re either going to try to hit it, catch it, rape it, or eat it.

I always thought that animals ran away from people on instinct, because they don\'t really know what you\'re gonna do to them. It would probably still run away even if you were trying to feed it or something.

but if they have had previous pleasant experiences with humans, they don\'t run away.  However that possibly could be chalked up to a programmed responce.

Exactly, they have memory, I just doubt that they can truly "think"

Perhaps monkeys can.

all animals have a response to something done.. that requires thinking!

ya... it depends what we are considering to be "thought"

I bet when you guys think about that you would diefine it as "talking in your head".

Humans are the only animal that can do that because we are the only animal that has intelligent speech.

Now of course animals cant think to themselves.... "i should get up and go over there".

They want to go, they go.  Its called acting on instinct.

Hmmmmmm....
Intelligent speech huh?
Why is it intelligent, b/c we say it is?
For all we know, barking is a form of language, so is meowing, and all those noises they make. MAYBE, we\'re the dumb ones.

"Look at those humans, killing each other for no reason, they should live in peace and smell each others butts"--Some dog that is just "barking" to another dog.

Pigeons have developed some sort of thinking. They no longer fly away from humans, here at least. I could have kicked this one pigeon I was so close.

They think. My gfs cat comes over once in awhile. Well, one day she brought it over and as soon as we put it down it went straight for the fly wire door, problem was my dad fixed the hole that one of our dogs made, so the cat had nowhere to go. Pretty funny, but that proves that they remember things.

Also one of my dogs thinks when u call him, he\'ll walk to u a few steps, then turns around and takes a few steps, then walks towards u again unsure if he wants to come. He normaly just walks off, snob...  The other dog comes straight away..
