Montreal Fans Boo Star Spangled Banner

You can take the French out of France, but nothing changes...

MONTREAL (AP) -- Fans booed during the playing of the U.S. national anthem before the New York Islanders\' 6-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

The sellout crowd of 21,273 at Bell Centre was asked to "show your support and respect for two great nations" before the singing of the American and Canadian national anthems.

But a significant portion of the crowd booed throughout Star-Spangled Banner in an apparent display of their displeasure with the U.S.-led war against Iraq. More than 200,000 people turned out for an anti-war demonstration in Montreal last Saturday.

"I\'m sure there are a lot of people against the war, but some things people can\'t control," said New York\'s Alexei Yashin, who is from Russia. "They were probably showing what they feel about it."

Teammate Mark Parrish, a native of Bloomington, Minn., was upset hearing the boos.

"I came to the game pretty pumped up, but once I heard that it really got me going," Parrish said. "So I guess I can thank them a little bit for getting me more pumped up."

Its b/c of when montreal went to visit the islanders and got boo\'d during the canadien national anthem. Im sure the war is helping them forget either. *shrugs*

Ya, Montreal is the french part of Canada.  The city is in the province of Quebec which is also french.

Quebec doesnt even want to be a part of Canada and they have tried to separate from Canada so many times.  They want special powers and privelages that the other provinces do not have, and they want to be recognized as "special".  So many "real" Canadians dont even Consider Quebec a part of Canada.

I think the booing is probably a result of previous meetings between Canadian and American teams...

But maybe Rumsfield\'s comment had something to do with it

Hmm. Now reading my post, it really doesn\'t make sense. I really should start proofreading these. I\'m just in a bad mood right now so I\'m just ranting my head off. But luckee, it is wrong to boo any national anthem. Its just like burning their flag. Sports fans are just really wild to begin with anyway.

What do their opinions matter anyway?  We know that we are better, we dont boo the Canadian Anthem, that goes to show you we are already up on them.
