Can I have your  old system Sammy. :) I\'ll wait another 5 years and sell it on EBay as an antique. But it\'d help if you got really really famous too. :P

Besides, at least now the Geforce 3 card will be in good use... then I\'ll get a sweet gfxcard later, when you\'re stuck on those slow Radeon 9700 Pro\'s. ;)

EDIT: Besides, going from 466 MHz, 128 mb RAM and a Voodoo3 to 2.4 GHz, 512 mb RAM and a Geforce 3 is a pretty big step. It\'s not like I\'m gonna feel "damn this is so slow compared to what I\'m used to!". :)

I was like that at first.. Then u start to feel your pc isn\'t fast enough. Till you get stuck on your old machine while your PSU gets replaced. Then you wake up and remember you\'re on a highend machine compared to most people.. :)

Ok, I finally got bored of my old computer (as seen in the first post). Hell it\'s been more than 4 years now, I think I can justify it. ;)

Even though I upgraded my old PC with 1 gb RAM and a Geforce 6800gt, it\'s still ancient by today\'s standard.

Keep in mind that I\'m still a cheap bastard when it comes to stuff like this, so I\'m not gonna pay $999 for a high end CPU etc. :D But I still wanted reasonable performance and some room for upgrades. So here\'s what I ordered yesterday:

- Intel E2160 CPU
- Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 mb
- Corsair 550W PSU
- 2 gb Corsair XMS2 Xtreme Performance TwinX PC2-6400
- And a used 6600gt because I didn\'t have a PCI-E card on hand. It\'s obviously a temp card until I have decided which \'real\' card to get. I\'m waiting for new stuff from both AMD and Nvidia before deciding - might be Q1 2008 though. But I\'m just playing HL2 for now anyway and it\'s not all that demanding.

Again, keep in mind that I\'m going for the most performance for the money. Hence why I\'m aiming to overclock the CPU to 3 GHz-ish (funny, that was also my aim 4 years ago :)). And I chose a P35 mb so I can drop in a Penryn quad core, when the price is right. :)

Intel has some great CPU\'s, just can\'t bring myself to jump the AMD ship yet. I\'ll stick around till it sinks, I guess.

What OS? If you run a 64bit Vista, go for at least 4 gigs of RAM.

I\'ll stay with XP for as long as humanly possible... If I upgrade to Vista I\'ll get more RAM. But hopefully that day won\'t come soon. :D

Really I dont even know the purpose of Vista.

I ve seen nothing new worth talking about in it and takes too much memory resources needlessly.

It is stupid really. Technology improves, costs are reduced, and when you can finally have better and cheaper hardware to run things faster, MS comes up with an OS that takes up a lot from the hardware\'s CPU and memory, making things slower again.

I am trying to get a new computer with no Vista but they all sell new computers with Vista, and most of the time with just 1GB of RAM.

i see.  remember windows 98?  microsoft later release another version called windows 98 second edition.

Even Windows XP have several versions going on with it too.  Such as Service Pack 1, 2, 3, and the latest is the 4th version i think.

i wouldn\'t be surprise if Vista will have similiar approach in the near future.

I done the exact same thing, I couldn\'t figure out what he was bragging about.

On another note, come Friday I order my Evga 8800 Ultra!
Yes, $629 bucks down the drain!

*gulp*

Congrats, I\'m quite envious. :D

(not about spending $629 though!)

What happened to the 2900XT(s)?

Benchmarks show the 2900 trailing behind.

Part of me really wants to get a 2900 due to the fact I have a Crossfire board, but Crossfire is still half-ass supported.   Just going to buy one big card and be done with it.  If I need, I can always replace the motherboard with a SLi board (doubt that ever happens tho).

But to be perfectly honest, my X1950 Pro does just fine running TF2 and the Quake Wars demo.

The 8800 Ultra is damn fine, no doubt about it. But damn, it\'s a lotta money!

I heard AMD is releasing a 2900 Pro now. The only difference between it and the XT is the clock speed, so you can just overclock it a bit and viola! Instant 2900 XT. And it\'s like $270 I think. :)

Then again, the 2950 is just round the corner and should be even faster... Decisions, decisions.
