Smackdown 5 First Info
« on: April 11, 2003, 06:53:26 AM »
For anybody like myself, who is a WWE fan and a fan of the Smackdown! series by THQ here is the first news about the upcoming game set for November 2003

Better gameplay, more environments, new submission moves... and a more prominent role for the divas. Full lowdown right here

Sources at THQ have confirmed that developers Yuke\'s are working on WWE SmackDown! 5 for PS2 - the sequel to the recently-released Shut Your Mouth - and that it will be released in the UK in November 2003.

The latest instalment of the best-selling wrestling series will place a greater focus on the actual gameplay and fighting system, with submissions playing a much more significant role - lending a more strategic element to the game.

Locking on, and escaping from submission holds (such as figure-four leglocks or the Crippler Crossface), will almost be a mini-game in itself, with your potential for success based on how fatigued your character (and your opponent) is.

Meanwhile, to execute more traditional finishing manoeuvres, you\'ll now first have to drag your opponent into the centre of the ring. So, as would be the case in reality, you couldn\'t pull off a People\'s Elbow if your opponent was lying near the turnbuckles.

A more realistic approach to each character\'s strengths and weaknesses is also likely to be included. The example we were given is that you\'ll no longer see things like Spike Dudley being able to powerslam the Big Show. Makes sense.
As far as the Season mode is concerned, Yuke\'s are currently said to be considering implementing a risk/reward system. For instance, as you progress through the game, you would earn money which could then be spent on health drinks to help you recover from injuries or new costumes.

The developers are also thinking about creating more organic environments - offering an added degree of interactivity - and expanding on the number and variety of backstage areas.

While there was hardly a shortage of match options in Shut Your Mouth, we can still expect to see a handful of new ones in its successor. Most notably, we were told, "The divas haven\'t played enough of a role in the games," and that they would be incorporated in the new SmackDown! in (ahem) a more "sexual sense." We can only surmise that this means that the likes of Bra & Panties bouts and mud wrestling matches are likely to make an appearance.

Finally, when we pressed THQ about whether the game would be online compatible, we got a cagey response, being told that "the challenge is out there" to get a fighting game online: "If you\'re just going to download content, why bother?" So, as and when the SmackDown! series does go online, expect it to offer fully-fledged multiplayer matches. But whether it\'ll happen or not in SmackDown! 5 remains to be seen.

Should be cool.I\'m still playing Shut Your Mouth even though I got it way back in November.

:) :D

Sounds great.  Exactly what I\'ve been waiting for.  I only have 1 or 2 complaints about SYM.  You can\'t break submission holds on your tag partner.  I hope they change that.

Those 3 features would make the best wrestling game ever.

If it has online... it would be a no brainer to me.  A definate buy.  Let us hope.

I could careless about bra and panties matches...

I Wanna see something like an online-Story mode, like 30 people sign up to play in a federation, and you battle out for the belts with weekly events... that would be awsome....

Have any of you played EWR? I am hoping that someday we will get an Online/Simulation/Wrestling type thing that combines the best of everything

Guess ill be waiting for a while, but by the time Smackdown 10 or so comes out i should be all set :-P

Heyyy!  That\'s a great idea.  Although, you could probably just set the whole thing up yourself, not the same though, is it?

Anyways, I downloaded that game about a month ago on my friends recommendation.. but never got around to playing it.:nut:

Yeah, i tried it, it is pretty boring but the idea of it is pretty nice. Its hard to make a good text based simulation wrestling game good anyways, but thats where THQ comes in :) Now only to get them off there lazy butts and get them to start working on ittttt

I was going to buy SD!4 but I\'d rather wait for 5, hope it is even more improved than SYM.

SYM is an amazing wrestling game.  Without having played Def Jam Vendetta, I\'d say it\'s easily the best wrestling game since No Mercy, and in many ways it eclipses it.

I hope they improve the Royal Rumble mode.  It\'s hard to defend against being tossed over the top rope.

If you have one other person with you, it\'s pretty damn easy to make it from #1 ---> #30

Little bit harder if you\'re by yourself, but still doable.

You just need to grab them and throw them into the ropes AS SOON as they enter the ring, then hit them over.

Not so fun, though,

I have good news for you all.
THQ have said that RAW 2:Ruthless Aggression for the X-Box & Wrestlemania XIX for the Gamecube will have multiplayer season modes AND blood so expect these two features to appear on SD!5

I love SYM, it really surpassed my expectations and multiplayer it\'s such a good laugh, and is really good. bnut believe me if you can get 6 players together, then this game is one of the best multiplayer games out there cause matches like HIAC and Ladder are SO funny, and when you play against your mates it\'s just SO hard!

The control system should stay the same cos it works SO well in the Smackdown! series.
I think in season mode you should have more freedom to do what you want and have it go on for roughly 5-10 years.but to keep it fresh they should work on some option were you can your own cutscenes and also make your own storylines.
so for example, you should talk to whoever you want instead of the usual random 1-2 every week and then have more choices of what to say.

I also would like to see it where if you hit your tag team partner, they turn on you cos it was crap when you could accidentally hit him a few times and he\'d just go help you.

I really don\'t care for the blood at all.

My favorite thing to do in SYM is wait until Hebner gets knocked out then run outside the ring and get a chair!!

It\'s kind of stupid though that you can turn on DQ and lowblows and blatant attacks to the referee aren\'t disqualifications.
