Sony confirms release date for FFXI and HDD

http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/16/2053244

There\'s a reason the title of this post puts them together
It\'s a bundle purchase. $99 US gets you the40GB HDD with FFXI pre-installed.

Reading the plans, looks like Sony wants to retrofit the PS2 to be more like... an X-Box

I love how Sony\'s redefining history here.

quote:"With the battle for console supremacy decided, we are departing from the status quo in an effort to broaden the in-home entertainment market with the release of the Hard Disk Drive for PlayStation 2," said Andrew House, executive vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "The online world is dynamic and constantly changing, and with the Hard Disk Drive consumers can truly capitalize on the fusion of content -- whether it be gaming applications, communities, digital media delivery -- and refresh and expand the experience infinitely."

As much as I love FF, nothing can beat EQ.

Shit. Doesnt seem like a terrible deal to me. Sadly enough i think its too late. 2005 ps3. Or so they hope. Not enough time for it to really be utilized and taken advantage of.

Have they mentioned what other games would take advantage of it?  I don\'t think it\'s going to do very well here.

How much is Square charging as the monthly fee?

It\'s all in the press release at http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/030916/sftu104_1.html

Only SOCOM II and Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain are confirmed. No word on monthly pricing for FF XI

Exactly.

Although the game does sound interesting, why the hell would I want to get the PS2 version that\'s going to cost extra and be much less functional?

Perhaps I\'ll get the PC version, but I don\'t have much time nowadays.

Well, they do have an impressive lineup of games for online gaming.  I wonder how many of them will actually take advantage of the HDD though.

I\'m not particularly interested in anything they have to offer, but they are putting more effort into it than I thought.

FFXI is the only game that requires the Harddrive.

But many more will use it.

about a year too late for the HDD.

not buying it either. i\'d rather stay playing EQ atm untill World of warcraft launch for a MMORPG.
can\'t see why not!

One word: *yawn*

I\'ve said it time and time again, add-on\'s are failures and Sony is just now noticing that, so they are scrambling and trying to figure out how to market this.

Too late for me. I\'d rather wait for the ps3 than buy an addon for the ps2 now.

Addons always fail, who wants to fork out for this when the PS2 is already overpriced compared to the better powered and equipped opposition.

Anyone remember the 32x, mega CD, Gamegear TV tuner etc etc etc.......?

Sony will fail with these addons as long as their heads remain so big they can\'t remove them from their own arses.

One year too late and 40gb smaller than the price says.

the PS2 HD addon will be a success

its moronic to compare it to 32x, or mega cd, etc.
none of those guys had 27million+ units sold

i\'m just not interested
