No it isn\'t. Let me rig up the microphone to the pc and record off the PSW DVD Kazunori Yamauchi (through his translator) clearly saying it\'s rendered and not just a flat backdrop.

Then it\'s a low poly background with photographic textures.

Yes, the canyon has polys in it, no photo texture. PD said they had a very poweful rendering engine and that engine has rendered that canyon, that\'s 3D ppl and I doubt that scene with the crowd running is CG because look at the textures on the track, compare those textures to a regular pic of the canyon track and you see the textures are the same. The car model is ingame, only difference I see is there are 3D ppl.

  Funny to see ppl debate on not being sure if some shots are real time ingame 3D or not, in this PS2 game - in contrast to the nowadays general \'acceptance\' that PS2 is the
\'weakest\' console or \'obsolete\' as PS2 bashers fondly say.

btw, the canyon is indeed 3D. The proof are the different angle shots ; the perspective of the canyons is correct in eagle-eye shot as well as normal cam. But it\'s not THAT high poly as you think ; alot of different (photo)texture tiles have been mapped over the geometry in a very smart \'seamless\' way. If you see the game in motion you can probably spot the polygon edges while the camera angle changes.

Download the newer vids and you will see that the Grand Canyon track is indeed fully 3D. When the camera pans from left to right, you can see the canyon pan with it. In earlier vids the camera was normally stationary (because it was just a temporary backdrop). Its now fully 3D.

Now this is one impressive track.

If you are a insider at ign.com you will be able to see the animated crowds in a replay and the replay isn\'t CG according to the guy saw it. He said the crowds look real good.

This game is the best looking ps2 game so far. You cannot fault PD in any way at all. They certainly know how to harness the power of the ps2.

The Italian track is called \'Citta di Aria\'

IMO the canyon shots look believable to be realtime, but that pic with the spectators is alittle ridiculous... Hopefully I am wrong though.
