DVD Burner
« on: November 04, 2003, 08:47:07 AM »
I just bought one of those Sony DVD all in one burners that do everything DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW... my question is, what format is the best and most compatible with other DVD players.  I bought some DVD-RW\'s and made a back up of one of my DVD\'s and it played fine on my regular DVD player.  Why so many different formats?

I too have a sony DVD multiburner and I have been transfering some MiniDV home movies onto DVD+RW and DVD+R disks. They play in my cheap multiregion DVD player absolutely fine.

Correct Gman, +R is supposed to be the most stable format, but the problem lies with the compatibility of some older DVD players. My brother has a Toshiba DVD player about 18 months old and it wont play +R at all.

So why is -R newer?  What is the difference between the two?

http://www.dvd-recordable.net is a good place to start if you have questions...

There are only two formats: + and -
And I\'ve found - to be most compatible but I think it\'s pretty even. The PS2 prior to the newest version, can only support -R, I think the newest PS2 version supports both -R/RW and +R/RW

And of course, you should only make legal backups of your dvd movies :)

yea +r i thought is around 90% compatible with dvd players - thats including dvd roms on pcs

-r had problems if i recall on dvd roms and was only considered 60%

i own the same burner and i always make legal copies ;)

DVD-ram sucks balls though and isn\'t usable in most older dvd players and newer ones for that matter...

I\'ve always looked upon DVD-RAM as a storage solution for digital cameras and has no real uses besides that.

It\'s not really a competetive format like + and - are anyway.

+R works on my DVD player, that I just bought, nothing else does.

Nothing worked on my PS2 at all, which is why I bought that DVD player.

-Ram is useless.  First one to die, methinks.

???  I was under the impression DVD-R is more compatible than DVD+R.  I don\'t have one of these burners so I can\'t be sure but +R is the newer tech, -R *should* be the one that\'s most stable with everything that\'s out there.

Unfortunately, the DVD+R disc type does NOT even begin to compare with DVD-R as far as DVD playback compatibility. However, the actual level of DVD workability on players of DVD+RW is claimed to be about equal to DVD-RW. Of course, even so, neither the DVD+R nor the older DVD+RW discs are as popular as DVD-R and DVD-RW are.

Basically +R/W is the best and most robust but not the most compatible with older players.

And there I was under the impression that +R is more compatible, because it was made with compatibility in mind.  As well, virtually anything newer than 3 years old plays it... or at least I\'ve had no problems...  R/W or multisession disks can still cause some problems though... like reading only track 1 or something.

Denon DVD players play +R, unless you get to universal players (high end).

My parents panasonic DVD player playes my +R disks, don\'t know about other formats.

I\'m in the same situation. I play all DVDs through my PS2, so am I right in thinking I should go for -Rs?

As far as I can tell, my PS2 won\'t play ANY burned DVD disks, in ANY format.  To be fair though, in the last few months it\'s gotten finikey again over playing DVDs (time to open her up again), so it MAY be that.

At least where I live/shop, it\'s actually become difficult to find/buy anything but +R and +RW.  The selection will be at most 1 choice for anything else.

Well then there\'s something wrong with your PS2 because the PS2 does in fact play DVD-R. So Rick, DVD-R is a safe bet. I\'ve had a Pioneer A03 (-R/RW) for 2 years, I\'ve only come across one dvd player that hasn\'t been able to play a DVD-R disc and I\'ve tried my discs on PS2 and about 8-9 different dvd players.

But anyway, there really isn\'t a format war anymore since most manufacturers are now offering dual format recorders...
