Got a laptop yesterday
« on: December 02, 2003, 03:36:52 AM »
Yay, I finally got myself a laptop... it\'s not a monster because I just wanted to be able to write and surf with it. Besides, it should be cheap. :D

I got a Dell Latitude:

13.3" TFT screen
10 gig harddrive
Xircom Ethernet adaptor
Not so fast though - it\'s a Pentium 233 MHz. But plenty fast for my use. Running Win2k Pro.

It doesn\'t appear to be used much. The battery lasts well over two hours (tested it earlier today, but had to stop @ about two hours - and there was about 40% left).

Oh btw, what (older) games could/should I install (just for kicks)? I can\'t seem to remember any on top of my head. :)
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAPETIME!
(thanks Chizzy!)

Straying a litte OT here but:

Anyone who has any experience with Yamaha AC-XG soundcards?
I only have a S/PDIF output on my lap top which has that sound card and I was wondering if anyone knows if I can get 5.1 signal out to an external DD5.1 decoder... I just bought some Logitech Z-680s 5.1 set and can only get 2.1 sound with the analogue cables they came supplied with. Are there any special S/PDIF cables I need to use to get 5.1. I\'m pretty certain the sound card is a 5.1 soundcard tho

depends..
If the Logitech Z-680s speakers have a (AC3) Dolby Digital decoder, You won\'t get 5.1 sound in general use.
Only in DVD movies and games that carry a AC3 signal will you get surround. You\'ll need a Coaxial or Optical cable for this.  Depending on what type of SPDIF port you have.. If the sound chipset decodes AC3, you\'ll wanna disable it and allow it to pass through to the receiver.

You can use analog cables if the sound chipset can decode AC3 on the fly and send it to your speakers. But thats only if your speakers have the analog inputs needed (Front Left, Right - Rear Left, Right - Center, Sub) etc.

You need Nforce2 Chipset that carrys MCP-T technology. Which encodes all PCM signals into AC3 and sends it via spdif to the receiver for gaming.. Only thing that has this are Nforce2 motherboards. I\'ve yet to see a soundcard on the market that encodes into Dolby Digital in realtime.

The speakers came with an external decoder that can decode DD5.1 (AC3), DTS and PLII. It has inputs for analogue (3 cables), optical and coax.

It came with the standard 3 cord analogue cables. The problem is that the sound card on my lap top only has 1 output (the S/PDIF) so I can only connect one analogue cord to it, and thus I only get 2.1 sound.

But it does have a S/PDIF out which I think can be used to output a DD5.1 signal to an external decoder with a coax input. Only problem is that I have no idea what kind of cable that requires...

Yeah I know I\'ll only be getting 5.1 in movies and games that has AC3 sound but that\'s quite alright. It\'s better than never experiencing anything other than 2.1 sound when you\'ve got a 5.1 set-up!

Here are some links I\'ve found on the subject:

At the bottom of the page there\'s an explanation of Toshlink and Coax.
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/audio_toslink_adapters.html#co2

Here\'s a review of an older Toshiba model (5200-701) with the same sound card as my newer 5200-903:
http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/notebooks/0,39023980,10002285,00.htm

It says here:
"The serial, parallel and PS/2 ports have gone, and in their stead you get three USB connectors, FireWire, a VGA output and a choice of analogue or S/PDIF digital audio, which will come in handy if you have a 5.1 speaker set and want digital surround effects from DVD film soundtracks.

Audio processing is handled by a Yamaha AC-XG chip, and the sound quality from the integrated stereo speakers was unusually good."

So I now know that 5.1 should be possible just not how to do it

Here\'s a cable I think might do the trick:

If anyone knows if this is what I need, please feel free to help! :)

That\'s a Coaxial cable. If you have a Spdif port for it. That\'s what you need. :)

Toslink / Optical

Coaxial / Spdif

Although u should have gotten a optical & digital coaxial cables with your speaker system.

Thanks for the answer Soul. I\'ve done some more research and looked on the net. None of those two cables will work since the S/PDIF output on my sound card is a minijack output. I\'ve now found out that I need from this website:
http://alive.singnet.com.sg/tech/digital-io.htm

"Get Coaxial Output from the Yellow Digital Minijack Output
Mark from 3DsoundSurge mailed me that it was very easy to get coaxial output from the yellow digital out on the new SBLive! cards. Just get a mono minijack-to-coaxial/RCA cable from your local hardware store. It shouldn\'t cost you more than five bucks!

Mathias Svensson sends in his picture of the signals available in the yellow minijack digital out:

It has to have a minijack plug in one end and a coax-plug in the other one.

Only problem which remains now is I can\'t find a store which sells such a cable! I\'ve searched online and I\'ve also tried the local electronics store... :/

I didn\'t get any optical or digital cables with the system, only 3-way analogue ones that can be used on desktop soundcards like the creative ones.

That\'s a 3.5mm stereo mini jack. Not sure how\'d it would work with a DD signal.

This one is what i used for my sblive5.1 card (mono to coaxial/Rca)
