Your online & offline music ~ which collection is bigger?
« on: December 02, 2003, 01:12:54 PM »
I used to love going to the music store to buy new CDs (well, as long as I had money) but anymore I get almost everything on the web.  It\'s just another one of those things that computers have completely changed for me. Frankly, it doesn\'t bother me either ~ In fact, I like things better this way.  At least I still have the option to go "on foot" if I want to.  Do you still like to buy the CDs from the store, or do you get your music online?  If online, what service do you use?

My offline collection is bigger, simply because I\'ve yet to convert everything into MP3 format. Right now, I am around six gigs of MP3\'s - but I have well over 500 cd\'s...

As for this being "unwanted turf" - as long as we don\'t go namking Kazaa and talk about stealing things, it\'s fine. There are plenty of legit MP3 sites out there.

I\'ve converted every one of my 300+ CDs in to MP3 format, so my online collection\'s a bit larger... at 9 gigs, it still fits on 2 DVDs :p

I\'m going to have to get around to doing them all in ogg one day, but the last time I converted everything into MP3 it took me almost 2 months of daily ripping/compressing.

I do mine slowly. Will convert a couple cds here and there. My main problem is, with all these MP3\'s, I still find myself hitting next, even when iTunes is on shuffle.

My online music collection is bigger, since I convert just about all my CD\'s into MP3 format.  The speakers connected to my computer are better than the ones connected to my stereo anyway, so it makes sense to listen to them here.

WHat do you use to rip your collection?  I need to do that.  I have a few hundred discs myself and would like to do the same.

dBpowerAMP

I have more mp3s than CDs, even though I had lost all of my mp3s in an unavoidable format. :(   Gonna back up my collection this time.

Just curious: How much HD space do you have?
And how many mp3s does that equal out to?

I never buy a single, unless I really love the band / singer and want the b-sides.

Example:  I have around 70-80 Tori Amos cds. All her main cds, a lot of the singles and import singles. Not to mention soundtracks and live bootlegs.

I only tend to buy singles. Only have a few albums. I mainly wanna hear a song before buying it. I can\'t stand albums that have 12 songs and only 1 of them is decent.
