Australians: Please recommend a DVD ordering site
« on: December 03, 2003, 04:49:33 PM »
There\'s a region zero DVD published in Australia that I want to purchase, and I\'m looking for a good online retailer.  Do you know of any reliable ones that ship internationally?  Thanks!

"Paris, Texas" released by Madman Cinema.

This is the DVD.  It\'s listed on this Australian website, but I think they only sell wholesale.  I can\'t figure out how to create an account with them, and you need an account to complete your transaction after adding it to the shopping cart.

I\'m going to begin searching for a retailer, and I\'ll post if I find an acceptable one.

Looks like a form to register - but it\'s for trading or some nonsense.

Leave it to Aussie\'s to make a site like that.

I found the DVD on another website, and it says it\'s region 0, but "formatted for PAL displays, (Australian standard)"  or something like that.  Can I assume that this simply refers to the aspect ratio of the image, and not to some alternate standard of data encoding?  What I mean is... the disk will play on my region 1 player, and display on my US spec television, right?  The aspect ratio might be a bit off, but if I can scale it using the DVD and television controls, I should be able to get a good viewable image, right?

Or am I wrong?

Wrong. If your DVD player is not NTSC / PAL - you won\'t get an image. Different encoding / speed.

What dvd player do you have? It needs to be multi-region and display PAL/NTSC signals

yea you can play it in your PC with hacked firmware for the DVD-ROM but unless you grab a multiregion player you can\'t watch it. :(

FIE!

I\'m not going to buy a multi region player just to watch one DVD.  I wish they\'d get around to releasing the Region 1 version already.  Damn studio has been saying they would bring it out for years.

The DVD is multiregion, so that\'s not the issue.  The disk is encoded in PAL format, not NTSC.  Why do you Australians always have to be different?  Even the canadians use NTSC, and they\'re a commonwealth country!

Oh well, at least you call your currency the "dollar" so you got something right.  :)

I guess their electricity operates at 50Hz, along with the rest of Europe?  Aren\'t all Aussies just convicts from the Uk anyway?
