Ok, well my mother puchased a computer w/o me. I told her to call when she was going out for one but of course they think they can do everything.

She ended up getting a Presario 2.6 GHz (Celeron : (. ), 256Mb Of DDR, 80Gig HD with a 64Mb Intel Video card. Now My cusin has a satellite laptop w/ only a 1.6GHz Celeron 256 SD and some shitty Vid Card yet he can run music programs etc (fruityloops4 for those that know anything about it) faster than I can w/ a small CPU load. The load on mine doesnt seem too be that great but the speakers crack(le) on larger songs/wavs.

I have no idea what the hell is going on, but even a celeron fresh out the box should have a good refresh rate and a lower CPU load when doing anything. Even the windows (files) load semi slow.

All i want to know is what is going on and if I should return the F*er.

Yeah thats fine for me. I mean she got a deal that came with a 17" monitor and a pretty snazzy printer for 900$. 700 with rebates. 2.4P4 and 512DDR for the price doesnt sound that bad at all. Id rather build my own but this is for my mum so you know how that goes.

I hate compaqs!  I have one now and am in the process of replacing the motherboard, i\'ve had nothing but trouble with it.  I\'m just happy I got it for free and didn\'t have to waste my money on it.

Dell has some screaming deals right now.  That deal that THX presented earlier you can get straight through Dell.  It also has a 17" monitor with it as well.  It\'s a complete 2.6 ghz computer for 500 bucks.  They just got one here at the edit house where I am working.  I was actually thinking about buying one to use as a jukebox for my stereo.  I could use a new monitor anyway.

Nice. No answers as to why the system does not run well? I mean cause i would even expect a crappy pc to at least be able to handle such things out the box, but this is just rediculous.

Compaq\'s use to have alot of problems with their soundcard. Especially when mixed with their monitor-speakers built in.

As to it being slow. You may want to check and see how much useless crap is loaded and starting up when windows loads. Anytime I am forced to troubleshoot a new pc. I go uninstalling almost all of the useless crap it has installed by default.

first thing I do with a new computer is format the sucker and do a clean install of windows, without all the junk vendors pile into systems nowadays.

Go for dell if you gotta buy one retail!  And DO NOT get a celeron.  If you want to do ANYTHING smoothly, you should not go celeron.  The new line of celerons get beat by the $60 AMD Durons.  Horrible products.

Yeah. They are pieces of shit.

Never had an AMD. Used them but dont remember how good they were. All the useless crap i basically delete anyway, I just dont understand how a system that clocks so well (while the parts are cheap) can do so bad. Eh. I guess ill just replace the damn thing. That or give it to my little sister and get a better PC.
