Spot the oxymoron!
« on: January 08, 2004, 07:17:52 AM »
This is my City\'s homepage and I am disturbed by this quote - before I post it I will give someone a chance to find it.  HINT - its in the 3rd paragraph.

http://www.phenixcityal.us/history.asp

Not only that - they deleted a lot of the "true" history of the city most notably:

It was originally named Sodom.

It had more organized crime in the 1940\'s and 50\'s than Chicago ever did.

General Patton wanted to invade Phenix City and "level the town" after GI\'s repeated returned beaten or didn\'t return at all after going into town.  It is also interesting to note that the prostitutes in Phenix City frequently "rolled" GI\'s with a pair of brass nuckles and robbed them.

The Alabama Attorney General Elect was assasinated by the Deputy Sheriff in 1954.

The National Guard was called in and Martial Law was declared by the Govenor in 1955 - the first time that ever happened on US soil.

Good job Gman... not too hard, but can you believe they label the guy as a philanthopist?  Then again they spell Phoenix as Phenix...

I find the history of this town very interesing - here are some links on the "Porky\'s" era as I like to call it:

http://home.hiwaay.net/~magro/phenix.html

^^^ That one has paratrooper stories about Phenix City - very good site

I have a worse story than that... my wifes family history dates back to the pre Civil war era and her sister\'s hobby is to write about it.  So to make a long story short she wrote about one of their relatives who was a "slave overseer" aka a "whip cracker" and her sister gave the history a nice sugar coating by saying "even though he was in charge of the slaves, the slaves all loved him because of his compassion and generousity when it came to food rations and work assignments."  My wife actually believed that!!!!  I had to explain to her what an overseer was - he was the guy who whipped the slaves when they didn\'t do their work or misbehaved in some way... to this day I make fun of her constantly about it.   My family on the other hand ran an underground railroad in New Hampshire so it makes it so easy to make fun of her and hillbilly ancestors. ;)

Giga,

Do yer in-laws call the Civil War "The Northern Aggression" or "War Between the States"? They make it sound so much like they were the victims. I say God had enough and put the smack down on \'em. :) Ever since, the South has been plagued by mullets, low IQ, Dixie Chicks, KKK and bad country music. :p

Yeah the "War of Northern Aggression" hahahah

The ancestor that fought for the Confederacy (I think he was the cracker too) was struck my lightning when he moved to Texas and get this "he had a toothache one day so used a rusty nail to pry the tooth out."  I swear my wife\'s family history is some of the funniest reading.  I can\'t wait till my sister in law sends her letters - good bathroom reading material ;)

Rusty nail to pry out a bloody rotten tooth? Not only is God angry at her family but Darwin\'s Theory of Natural Selection will kill off the stupid from her lineage!

When science and God is against you, you ain\'t got much of a chance. :p

That is her mothers side I believe - her fathers side is 2 generations removed from Italy so they weren\'t in the US during this time.  Another humerous part is when they moved to Texas they encountered many American Indians and some Indian woman tried to kidnap my wife\'s great grandmother when she was a baby.  I should transcibe the letters they really are funny. :)

Slavery is a myth created by the liberal media to push forth their affirmative action agenda.

In other news. How is your sister able to get such detailed info about the family\'s history? I know most of my family tree back to the late 1800\'s(Post Civil War Period) but I\'ll be damned to find out how nice my great-great-great-grandfather was.
