In my garage/band/smokentoke/chill room I am thinking about getting a projector.

I have no clue about them, only heard they are like an alternative to a big screen.

I would mostly use it for watching movies, and playing games (if thats even humanly possible).

Could someone give me the down low? Remember I know nothing really about home theatres, and am looking for one dirt cheap.

Sorry to break it to you, but "dirt cheap" and "front projection" do not go together.  Your only hope is to find a POS old unit at a thrift shop or something.  However, you could spend months hunting for it, assuming you can even find one in Alaska.  In Los Angeles it wouldn\'t take as long to run across something.

It can go up to 300 inches...  I just have it in storage right now.

he\'s just kidding around, the stupid POS being talked about is a series of mirrors that magnifies and projects a standard TV.  It sucks.

$900 is the price you\'re looking at for decent DVD playing projection.  $2g\'s for HD projection.  These choices are digital so you must have a light-controlled room.  The money projectors are CRT and they start at $8gs and up for lovely ones.  This does not factor in the cost of a screen, mount, and the time & know-how it takes to set one up.

-An affordable 16:9 WVGA, $1079 at J&R

-Costs a little more but excellent buy for the money

Minuses
-Contrast and brightess not as good as the DLP projectors
-Screen door effect noticeable but only at big 100"+ screen sizes
-For the money a DVI input should be included

*Bottom Line: In a light controlled room this is the projector to get for DVDs and HDTV.

Sanyo PLV-Z1 (LCD) $1100 online - Link

An older model, now replaced by the 720p Z2.  Worth a look if you find one used at an awesome price.


The front-runner HD projectors for $2k are the Panasonic AE500 and the Sanyo Z2.

So with that 900 dollar one could I hook my ps2/xbox/gamecube/vcr/dvd/cable too?

Mostly ps2 and dvd would be key.

Yea.  The only problem is that you can\'t use the component output from the PS2 unless the game is progressive.  480i only works for S-Video and RCA inputs in this case.

This is because the $900 projectors don\'t have a component input, but a VGA.  They have a component -> VGA adapter but since VGA is natively progressive it *needs* a progressive signal.  It is possible though, with an external line doubler like the DVDO iScan Pro. :facelick:

You\'ll still have good results with the S-video from PS2.

Also consider using a PC as a DVD player.  You can also plays all those funny videos Gman posts on your 100" screen.  oo and then there\'s gaming...
