Oh I\'m on fire! Bring on the pop up ads!
« on: March 13, 2004, 01:14:54 PM »
Ok, so since my good computer is in my closet until I get new parts, I\'m using the good ol\' Compaq Presario w/ Win98.

This thing gets porn pop ups left and right.

I\'ve downloaded all Windows Updates, Ad-Aware, and even Pop-Up Stopper but these things still come up. It seems every time I open IE it comes up with a fake Jessica Simpson porn ad, or some stupid credit card thing.

Man today blows so bad.

And while we\'re at it... How the hell do I disable "Look up" links... They\'re these stupid things that turn words like, "porn" into little yellow bars that you click on to find porn.

Damnit I hate computers.

Spybot
Ad-Aware

Download and install both, they are free and simple to use spyware removal programs.  Each will find stuff the other won\'t, I run Spybot first since its way of deleting files is faster, less stuff for Ad-Aware to worry about.

*Update each* before running a scan..

For Spybot:
- Click Check For Updates.
- If one is found look towards the top where there are several download locations.
- Europe is selected as default, choose Rootboxen USA if you\'re in North America
- Download Updates then Run

For Ad-Aware:
- Click Check For Updates
- Click Connect and if I new update is available Click OK
- Once it\'s done click finish and then Start to run a scan

If you still get pop-ups go to:

- Start > Run > type services.msc
- Scroll down to Messenger and dbl click
- Select Startup Type = Disabled and STOP the service

Thank you sir, will do.

Anybody know about these "I Lookup Links"? They\'re driving me nuts.

EDIT: Nevermind, they\'re spyware. Hooray for SpyBot for teaching me that.

Hah, if it\'s not spyware (which it probably is) use Mozilla Firefox.  Say goodbye to pop-ups and 95% of the spyware that\'s out there.  It\'s also faster and more customizable than buggy IE.

Is your puter Windows XP?  If so you should be able to get to the Services menu by typing sevices.msc in the Start > Run box.

You could always go Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
