Math Wizards, I need some help...
« on: May 04, 2004, 02:38:22 PM »
How the heck do I figure out how big this piece of property is?

I assume I make it a square and then subtract out the triangles, but I have no clue.

I don\'t need to know exact, but I\'d love to know somewhat close.

If you can figure it out with the arc taken into effect you get bonus cookies.

The sizes are:

164.36 at the top
251.30 on the left side
97.88 on the bottom
333 on the right side

What would help is knowing the angles each side makes, without them it\'ll be hard to get a close answer.  With that information I could calculate it.  The only other hidden information would be the radius of the arc.

Actually, if you take out the radius of the arc, all the info needed is supplied, if you assume a right angle in the bottom right corner, you assume it\'s aligned so up is north, and you take the angle that top line is at :p

Haha, yea.  Even with those assumptions you don\'t have the angle of the left side. :p

oh yeah and with one more assumption of that side being perpendicular to the top side, which it looks to be.

And with those assumptions, along with the one that I did my math right, I got 42045.6 square feet, as an estimate.  Kinda took the arc into effect by making a straight line through it :p

I got ~41228.04 square feet minus the area of the arc.

So how did you work it out Black man?

Is it really right?

I was just wondering how much larger than an acre the property is.  I guess not much.

Anyway, we are buying this piece of land.  Not that it means anything with the picture you see here.

Well it could considerably off with those assumptions.

I broke it down into these triangles and did it in this order. I also did a little "protractor-ing" to guesstimate the angles. (assuming the picture is to scale)

BTW, Bozco, I didn\'t take out the arc.

What you guys came up with was probably right.  It should be an acre.  I was just wondering if it might be a little more.  Looks like it\'s pretty much right on.

Here is the house plans we have found so far that we\'ve liked the most.  Although the deck in the back would be a patio since we eventually want to put in a pool.

Pretty darn basic house, but a lot bigger than we have now.

What setbacks does the property come with?  Do you know how far back you must be from the street, and for utilities and such?
