Thats why you\'re supposed to buy the good surge protector.

Just for your information, if it got the modem, there\'s a good chance it at least hit your motherboard and made it quite abit weaker. I know from experience and I know other people who have the same problem, think it just got the modem and overtime realize it got more.

L-I-C just curious, how can a motherboard become weaker?  Not trying to start an argument, but I would think it work or be dead - nothing in between.

Maybe it\'s time you got a surge protector with phone jacks in it.

Not taken as an arguement..

I\'ll tell you what happened to me... Mine got struck and fried the modem. I replaced the modem. Worked fine for awhile and I noticed it was randomly restarting sometimes...I took it apart again and you could clearly see where it had burnt alittle..I figured, no big deal...Went to add a HD eventually, turned it off..never started back up. It had finally given out. Replaced the MB and everything was A-OK....Never had a problem until lighting hit the modem.... It\'s happened to other\'s, including Capcom ... Mine guess is it simply shorts the circuts out until they finally give away, or something to that extent.

The motherboard wasn\'t weaker, it was partially screwed.
Some components would have been cooked. So certain things would have worked fine while other things close to the killed components or on the same tracks would have most likely had problems. The storm would have spiked the motherboard.

Even if u have a surge protector, electricity can jump tracks and still fry your pc. I\'ve got one on my Fuse box, PSU and Power board; I still turn my pc off during a lightning storm.
Surge protectors are really good for 1 thing, insurance claims.

If you wanted to go all out you could get a Brick Wall line conditioner + UPS and sleep easy.

For once I agree with Soul, the best bet is NOT to use your PC / TV / etc during thunderstorms. Unplug the phone line from the PC and so on.. Surge Protectors can help sometimes, but not all the time.

Chances the guy that offered you the surge protector cost too expensive while all you need is like a $25 one when they purposedly pick a surge protector that cost $100 and over.

They can cost that much? Damn. I thought they were no more than like 25-30 bucks.
