Delete Damnit (help!)
« on: June 06, 2004, 09:37:45 AM »
Ok, I dont suck at computers but im not a Guru by far, but you know that typical problem where you try to delete something and it just doesnt go away?

Well there are quite a few things like that on my computer that are really pissing me off and in order to do certain things, i have to delete them. It ends up giving me the:

"Cannot delete ......: Access is Denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use"

Message. This thing is going to drive me nuts if i cant get rid of these things. Some of the files i cant delete are from certain programs (that i almost fully deleted) and the others are just spyware etc. that just happened to crawl onto my computer.

Help would be greatly appreciated...

I had a similar problem with a wav file, it was in the recycle bin but I couldn\'t delete it from there. After a few days I tried it while not connected to the net and it deleted. While I had IE open and online it wouldn\'t delete. Very strange.

I would think so. I havent used Dos in years and years. I completely forgot how to work with it.

Thanks thus far guys, i havent tackled the problem just yet. Lots of work. But i hope to have it done by the end of the day because there are a few things being restricted by these annoying little ****ers. Thanks again for the feedback

Ok there are a couple of things you can do one of them is to take Ownership of Your Files and Folders

"Windows Explorer/Locate the file or folder in question/Right Click/Properties/Security/Advanced/Owner Tab. In the change owner box, click new owner.

     [To Display the Security Tab: Start/Settings/Control Panel/Appearance & Themes/Folder Options. View/Advanced
and clear "Use Simple File Sharing".]

You can transfer ownership in two ways:

The current owner can grant the Take ownership permission to others, allowing those users to take ownership at any
     time.

An administrator can take ownership of any file on the computer. However, the administrator cannot transfer ownership
to others. This restriction keeps the administrator accountable.

Note:  In Windows XP Professional, the Everyone group no longer includes the Anonymous Logon group.

Permission Denied When Trying to Delete Folders/Files

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View/Unmark "Use Simple File Sharing". Right click the folder/file in question/Properties/Security/Advanced/Owner/Set Permissions"

Another thing you can do is :Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open. Close all open programs. Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe. Leave Task Manager open. Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the undeletable file is located in. At the command prompt type DEL where is the file you wish to delete. Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell. Close Task Manager.

There are other ways as well but considering it\'s been awhile since I have had this problem I have forgotten many of them

If it\'s a big file, especially a video file, then it\'s hanging in Explorer while it\'s reading the file to gather it\'s info. Delete it from the command line or simply click on the file and let it stay a while before you delete it.

NVIDIA: One question: Since its been forever using the prompt how do you change the directory? It starts off on C:\\Documents and Settings\\ Owner>

And i thought i did it right but i completely spaced on how to do it i guess. I know exactly where the file is but i just need to change the directory.

Edit/Update: Ok well i figured out how to get to the folder but when i type in DEL it says that the syntax is incorrect. Do i have to type in the name of the item along with the directory???
-----
Ok I know i may sound like some fool throwing in random commands but i tried putting DEL Hook.Dll (which is what im trying to delete) and then it tells me "access denied." Stupid DOS.

Depending on the file. If its a exe type file you\'re wanting to delete..  ALT Crtl Del and see if its in the Task Managers Processes. If it is, just end task and delete the file.

If you\'re in teh folder and you want to delete everything in it. Type del *.*

or you can delete the folder by leaving it.

cd..
del "foldername"

Make sure you Remove the "
If your using winxp, you can restart your pc.  Press F8 during boot and choose boot to command prompt.  Then you\'ll be able to delete whatever is giving you trouble.

Do you have spybot search and destroy? It works well for me , as long as you keep it updated. At least for all the spyware junk.

I rebooted into safe mode using the command prompt and deleted everything i needed to delete.

Well, some of the things i was trying to delete were .dll files and then just whole folders in general (usless programs and spam). Id dont really think it matters too much though. If you needed to get rid of it then you would just delete it you know?

meh. Thanks again ppl.
