Canon 20D

I dunno how many of you are into digital photography (if there is anybody) but I wanted to hear opinions, pros and cons about the recent announced Canon 20D, the new 8,2 MP SLR monster.

I\'ve been waiting a whiler to get a SLR, saving and reading reviews here and there, but this seems just great. Lemme show you the preview with examples from DPReview.

What do you think? Would you pay $1800 for a prosumer camera?

I don\'t think I\'d ever spend $2g\'s on a camcam.  I\'d imagine spending that much or more on a vidcam though when widscreen hd ones are available.  There\'s nothing like being embarassed and reminiscing at the same time.

I wonder if this camera use the CMOS instead of the CCD sensor...because I think this camera use a bigger image sensor since is CMOS...although CMOS can be smaller, but this one probably uses a bigger one which it bigger than the 1/1.8" CCD or 2/3" CCD...

Digital cameras are pretty sweet. I\'m with Nicon though. I dont think i\'d spend $2 G\'s on a camera. If i was going to buy some high tech vid camera or something, than i\'d definately spend that much on a camera.

I would like to add that bigger image sensor size means better picture and low light rendition.

I won\'t bother with the SLR camera since it not compact and require skills. I just go with point and shoot digital camera such as the Canon S410 ($399) with 4 megapixels and 1/1.8" CCD size...but that is just me.

I got my D60 about 2 years ago.  Took bout 30,000 photos with it and can never be happier. of course its not perfect but no camera is. learn to work around its weakness and you will be able to produce great photos no matter what camera you use.

I will only upgrade when Canon bring out full frame DSLR with a price tag of 1,500 or lower...but even then I will still be keeping my D60 for backup. I paid 2,200 for the camera. its worth every penny of it even today...

More MPs are always good, but ask yourself a few questions.  Are you really going to print anything bigger than A4? or anything that\'s bigger than 10inches by 14 inches? most beginners print no more than 8 by 10.  Remember if it looks good it would look good small.  

I\'ll take bigger pixel size than more pixel counts anyday.  

Also, have you considered lens choices? or you already have some EF lenses laying around?  they are far more important than the camera body.  They also keep their value far better than DSLR (where the value usually go down at least 25% the first). year)

Now on to the 20D:

is it a good camera? probably.  is it a good camera for beginner? perhaps but you will need to put yourself to learn it.  Assuming you have never own a SLR (since you said you have been waiting a while for a SLR...), it will take you awhile to learn to use the camera to even take decent pictures.  Unlike point and shoot where you just press the shutter, with SLR you have to know more or less what your doing to take fully advantage of it.  

I\'m sure you have already read stuff about this but the very good thing about DSLR is that you have no "film" to waste, so learning shouldn\'t be too hard.  You can always try different thing at no cost to you.  You will discover many things just by messing around with the settings at different time of the day.  I just love the bulb setting where you can set up your camera on a tripod and take a two hour photo where you make normal stars looking like shooting metors.

so finally is it worth it to dump 1800 for the 20D? of course! but do make sure you have some decent and fast lenses to combo with it.

Yup, I never had a digital cam, nor a film one. I never did need one though I\'ve been always interested in photography. That\'s true, but I must also say that for the last 2 years or so I\'ve been reading a lot about photography, cameras, etc, and even purchasinf specialised mags on this topic. I like photography.

Yup, I will be a newbie... that\'s crystal clear, but I always say that I prefer to spend my money in anything, but that \'anything\' have to be good enough. I may say that I don\'t mind to pay 2Gs for a camera, if it\'s a good product, of course. And I think, as you said, that the Canon 20D is a brilliant digital still camera.

Impressions bigger than A4? Probably... not most actually jejej. But I was considering to buy a DSLR and my first option was EOS 300D (Rebel) but taking into account the quality and skills of this new model and the product-cancellation of 300D... I think the best option right now, for a prosumer, is this 20D.

Yes, the lenses are as important, or even more, that the body. We know that 8,2MP are more than enough to take nice pictures and to print in a considerable size. But you won\'t take a single good photo without a good lenses. It\'s because of that that I wanna buy the KIT with the EF-S 17 - 85 mm F4.5 - F5.6 IS USM.



The other option (the camera will be available, as you probably know in 2 kits) would be the same lenses that 300D kit.. way worse than this one. It\'s worth 600$, I\'ll save around 100$ with the kit. I think they\'re a good lenses for a good price. The other option would cost around $1500... this one almost $2000.:o

Well, I believe that there\'s no better option for a beginner that a DSLR, if you can afford it. The possibility of take 1 million shots without printing and be able to check the results is something awesome, at least for me. Ill take advantage of that opportunity to learn and put in practice all the theory I\'ve learnt in these 2 years of reading.

lionken07, you seem to be an experienced photographer,... why dont you show us a couple of good pictures taken with your D60? Jejej, it would be cool BTW, may I have your msn to ask you a couple of questions about this topic?

All right usually more money = better lens, but theres a must get lens that cost less than $80.  

Its the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8.  I used it before my D60 with my Elan 7 film camera.  And you know what? even after owning a few L glasses its still one of my favorite lens! yes its that good (I wish I can say the same with the build quality... ).  Its most plastic but what do you expect for $80USD?  the lens is very good optically speaking.  That\'s what beginner needs sometimes, cheap lens with good optics.  It is also very VERY light (my lightest lens), that usually transfer to being the most use since I\'m a lazy heck and don\'t want to carry a 5 pounds lens with me all the time...

With that said, I may also add that its not the camera or the lens that\'s taking the photograph.  Its you who decides how the picture will/should look.  One of my friend got into photography not long after me and he got a pro Nikon body and lenses.  Spent about 6k or a little more than that all together.  After a while he asks me...

"what am I missing? I thought I got better eqiupment than you but your pictures are still better???:o"

Apparently what my friend lack are skills.  Something that everyone can obtain with enough practice.  

I have the Elan 7 + 50mm f1.8 for a little over a year.  I had to do manual zoom (walk back and forth) to get the right frame of the picture.  I told myself not to get another lens until I get at least a few good pictures that I think will sell (they were good but I didn\'t sell any )  

I dont\' use MSN but I do use AIM and windows Messenger.  If you have one of these I\'d be more than happy to talk about this further with you.

With that said, up until today I don\'t considered myself experienced because there are simply a lot to learn in the world of photography.  I\'m still learning even after all these years!!

I personally like my S400. Its not the best camera out there but I don\'t need something that takes pics far and whatnot. The picture quality is good as long as you know how to use it. I needed a compact camera that I can lug around with me to school and sporting events and other things I do. Its a good camera. I\'d like to get something bigger and higher MPs eventually and if I get into photography as a hobby.

If you are new why not start out with something smaller and way less expensive? Here are a few shots I took with my old 2.5 mp camera a few weeks ago. They print at 8x10 nicely.

Also, keep in mind some of the smaller canons like the power shots can be fitted with cases for underwater shots. I don\'t know if this applies to what you want to do but I love underwater photography. I also think canon is a good choice for a camera.
