I know, right? I know we\'re trying to pick on his lyrics, but when I read it I hear it in my head and am reminded how good of a cd that was.

I like his songs and all that, it\'s just his stage presence that I find lacking.

Yeah, a lot of mainstream rap is feeling music and not message music. People disregard the fact that they can be so catchy and make you feel a certain way because the lyrics arent complex with some deep meaning and some other bull.

Dont get me wrong though. I hate the radio and i hate most mainstream rap but some of it you just like because it sounds good. Bad music with good lyrics isnt necissarily good music. Might be good writing or poetry but not good music.

Culturally (not to be bogus) it just seems that different people like to dance to different things etc. and rap is creative no matter how people try to compare its so-called complexity to other genres.

Uhg. Way too long.

^^^^^

I was thinking that but didn\'t know how to articulate my thoughts as you did.

But what\'s even better than good music with bad lyrics is...*gasp*...good music with good lyrics. But sometimes it doesn\'t matter what the hell they\'re saying inthe song...some people just want to get their grind on and such.

It all depends on the reason  you listen to music too.

Some people use it as a relaxant, or an escape--there are styles and genres of music for that, ex: ambient, classical, bluegrass.

Some people use it as a social medium; a way to have fun. The phenomenon of how it feels good just singing along to the lyrics of a popular song with someone else, ex: most of modern day pop, or, rap music like 50 cent. You guys are talking about "feeling" music. I think \'In Da\' Club\' came out was such a hit just because it had that community feeling.

But some people, like me, listen to music because it is educational. Music can be intellectually and culturally enriching, but in my opinion, 50 cent is neither. You need good lyrics to get that message across (if you even have one).

This is like debating politics. Different strokes for different folks right?

Fuck is you listening to that is educational?

I call Bullshit on anyone who says that their favorite type of music is educational.

Music is entertainment. I don\'t go to a concert to be educated. I don\'t want a lecture. I want to have fun. You are supposed to listen to music because you enjoy it and it makes you feel a certain way. Music can have a message but that message can\'t come at the expense of the entertainment value or its garbage.

I think the only rapper they wouldn\'t have booed would be Eminem.  He could\'ve gotten away with it I bet.  They booed the Rasmus too haha.

San Fransisco Knights is pretty tight.  I heard about PUTS a few years ago, I like some of their stuff.  I also used to listen to J5 and a few other rap groups, but rap really isn\'t my thing for the most part.  What I hear on the radio rap-wise blows (to me) for the most part.

Check out:
Hieroglyphics
Dialated Peoples (more known)
Jurassic 5 (well known but i dont listen to them anymore really)
Typical cats (from chicago i think. dont know if you can find their stuff)

Bob Dylan. Johnny Cash. Nick Drake. Music\'s purpose is to entertain, but it shouldnt be its soul purpose (like 50 cent).

Don\'t tell me that you haven\'t ever learned anything, whether its about life or yourself, from music. You haven\'t ever described how you felt through a song\'s lyrics? It speaks for certain time periods, emotions, moods. I have a much better perception of what the Vietnam-era was like from Dylan than I would have gotten in a history book.

Songs, in themselves, can be little life lessons. If you like hip-hop try Aesop Rock\'s "No Regrets" or Babbletron\'s "Mechanical Royalty". Music is eye-opening; cathartic. I call it "learning through lyrics."

Yeah El-P is cool, I have Aesop Rock\'s album \'Bazooka Tooth\' and hes featured on there.  El-P also produced Cannibal Ox\'s album \'The Cold Vein\' if I remember correctly.

I\'m sure you\'ve heard of Atmosphere, Slug is pretty good.

Del is the shit. Hes in Hieroglyphics (group i mentioned).

"Music\'s purpose is to entertain, but it shouldnt be its soul purpose (like 50 cent)."

I wasnt going to bash your comment but as soon as you said that i couldnt help it. If you are saying that any artist cant make music that is souly for entertainment then you can keep youre learning music or w/e because entertainment has been one of the MAIN and ONLY reasons for some music for centuries. There were madrigals just for this purpose.

Of course there has always been music with meaning but that statement was just dumb. And just because a song has meaning doesnt mean you will really learn much from. Songs that teach you about yourself? If you have to figure out something from a song then id say you have a shitty sense of self.

Meh. Its not really that important but to say that music should be educational for many of the parts is kind of silly. Im sure a history book could tell you much more than a song by bob dylan.
