PSP To Play Games For Eight Hours
« on: September 25, 2004, 03:52:11 PM »
Reports featured in scans from the latest issue of Popular Science magazine suggest the PSP to be capable of playing games for up to eight hours non stop. While other options such as playing music will last up to ten hours, and watching movies up to two and a half hours.

While the reports from the October issue of Popular Science have yet to be confirmed by Sony, we have strong belief in a long battery life for the PSP.

We’ll have news from Sony as it surfaces within the next few days.

I don\'† know if this is speculation or actual tests run by them...

8 hours is reasonable for games, the only part of the PSP that bothers me is the UMD thing.  2.5 hours for movies AND you have to buy your movie on the UMD format.

Rumored price too...

Japanese PSP Price Released

Manfred Gerdes, SCEE German Managing Director, may have made a blunder. He recently confirmed that Sony\'s Playstation Portable (PSP) will launch in Japan with a price tag of 33,000 yen. According to official exchange rates for September 22, 2004, that equates directly to $298.268 US Dollars. (The price would probably get rounded out to a smooth $299.99). He said this does not confirm what the European or American prices will be.

Sony is trying to clean up this mess. Heather Sorensen, speaking for Sony Computer Entertainment America, told a news outlet, "official pricing for PSP (PlayStation Portable) has not been announced, and any information in this regard is only speculation."

Nintendo\'s announcement yesterday that the DS handheld will cost only $149.99 has certainly thrown SCEA off-guard, forcing them to either drop their planned price or try their hardest to sell a handheld 4 months late and double the price of the current competition. They\'re smart though, which is why they have been holding out on the American price point until the Nintendo DS price was confirmed.

When Sony releases a final, American price for the PSP, you\'ll find it right here at Gaming Horizon.

Yanked from TXB forums.

I very much doubt they\'ll launch it at that price, way too high for a portable.

Who\'s gonna buy it at launch anyway ? Btw, PSP isn\'t aimed at
an audience which can clearly NOT afford that. I mean, I just came back from vacation in Rome. It was my first time there, so pda-like functions, mp3 and games in one machine would have been very nice to have with me. Imagine ; PSP in pocket with a wireless mini display device on my wrist which serves as GPS. Would have been very handy.

On gaming length ;
Eight hours straight eh ? Sounds reasonable. I\'d be willing to
pay more for a battery which gets me more playtime.

Well this is w/o the battery expansion too so thats nice. If i can plug it in and charge it instead of buying new batteries then id be more than fine. Im not really worried about movies on it though. It would be a little silly to sit and watch a movie on it. I guess if they were cheap then it would be nice to use on my train rides.

meh.

I wouldn\'t pay more than $200 for a portable that\'s capable of what the PSP can do, not that I\'ll be buying one for that much.  I just want to play games and not have to pay the price for that other garbage.  Maybe they\'ll have a stripped down version and even then I wouldn\'t pay more than $100 for it.

UMD is one of the dumbest things I have heard of recently. A movie format for a portable gaming machine? How many movie\'s will there be? My guess is only high profile Sony titles.

I kinda feel the same way, $200 is my limit for any portable device.  But then I think about playing GT4 then switching to my MP3 collection while I\'m on a plane.  These two devices separately would cost over $300 so I\'m starting to see how the cost is justified.

PS- Hopefully the games will allow for custom soundtracks!

You guys think of PSP way too much as a mere portable game format like Game Boy.

Time will tell if it does all other functions than gaming great. If so, then imo PSP will truly be different market segment than Game Boys.

But how many times are you in that situation?

I guess I really can\'t talk about this one since I only have the Gameboy add-on for the cube.  I just don\'t find myself in enough situations to warrant the purchase of a portable system.

Right now I believe that the majority of portable gamers are kids and one would have to convince mom and dad to purchase this new portable.  I suppose that the PSP could change the portable market much like the original PS did years ago if everything goes well bring in a new crowd.

I could be dead wrong about kids owning the portable market and this could be me talking out of my ass./shrugs shoulders

EDIT:
Just did some reading, seems that the Gameboy is popular among 18-30 year olds as well.  This will certainly be interesting now that Nintendo finally has some competition in the portable market.

Thats exactly what sony is trying to do.They arent offering just gaming entertainment with PSP.They dont want the PSP to be viewd just like a games machine. They want to merge forms of electronic entertainment.Change the way the console/portable gaming devices are viewed. They want to establish some kind of a trend with the Playstation line up too by bringving movies, music, gaming and everything that is digital entertainment into one.

This news sounds like conjecture based upon what Sony said a LONG time ago.

Truth is, it will last between 3 - 8 hours depending on the developers use of the RAM.

Oh, and remember to turn your sound off. :)

^ Ehm... no, the use time depends alot on use of the umd disc drive. The RAM is solid state memory.

Anyway, I\'m 26 and I have a GBA. On when I\'m on vacactions and stuff I play for a while, then quit becuz ;

- i got bored playing a game
- i go out to see some monument in that foreign country
- i have to get moving to get to my hotel, destination etc.

Now...in all those cases, the GBA has to be stored away
into my backpack. If PSP would support functions like a GPS
map, up to date tourist info and stuff ; That would be VERY
convenient. :bounce:

Basic wireless internet functions and email would also be nice.

Maybe so - and that works a lot better on a home device. But at the same time, Nokia has done the same thing, Palm has and what not. People, on the average, do not want to pay more than $200 for a handheld.

I won\'t get it for that much. I barely have enough time to play Game Boy. I certainly won\'t be watching movies on it. That\'s why I have tvs and movie theaters.

I have a walkman or in-flight movie for the zero plane rides I\'ll likely take in PSP\'s life time.

Can\'t take it on the road since I\'m driving 90% of the time, too.

I don\'t even think parents would send their kids on the bus with it when they could get a GBA SP for cheap and soon enough, a Nintendo DS.

If it costs that much, I see Sony falling in line with the list of handheld could-have-beens.

Maybe I\'m wrong, though. We\'ll find out soon enough.

Like people have said, i dont think its going to be directed heavily at little kids etc. I mean since when would you give 10 y/o\'s mp3 players and things that play movies to carry around? Never. Its too much for a child.

The majority of Plastation gamers are primarily in their mid to late teens to late 20\'s or something like that? Anyway, im sure its that crowd that sony is aiming for.
