Saw

Went to see it tonight.  I don\'t want to ruin anything so I\'ll just say I was entertained for the most part, there are quite a few tense moments and of course a twist, a very good twist at that.

The film had a b-actor feel to it which is surprising considering there were some big names such as Danny Glover, Cary Ewles, and Monica Potter.

Anyone else check it out?

[SP]There are a few complaints I have that kept me from enjoying the whole film.  My biggest complaint is the villain\'s motives, the whole "I\'m making you appreciate your life" thing is just tired for me, perhaps I\'ve seen too many of these types of films.

Another is the absolute stupidity of these characters.  When Glover\'s character and his partner found the bad guy\'s hideout, and captured him after knowing what he was capable of, it amazes me they didn\'t call for back up.  I realize they were in a heated situation but still, immobolize the perp with a shot to the knee cap and be done with it, jesus christ.

Another is when Adam woke up in his apartment without power.  He knew someone was in his apartment and instead of making an exit he tried to find the guy with a camera flash...for fucks\' sake.

Lastly, why the hell didn\'t Monica Potter\'s character shoot Kep when she had the chance.  Stick one in their shoulder or knee cap and they will live so you can still get information out of them, the benefit is you have them wounded and at a disadvantage.

Bah, it was just sloppy is some areas while being very cool in other\'s...the whole bear trap scene was very cool, as were the other situations the guy came up with.  The twist had my jaw drop so I enjoyed that aspect of it.

I\'m mixed on it.

Well I thought it was very good. The actions you described I feel as if you just have to be human about it. The woman was in deep despair and I mean you can\'t just be rational when a situation like that is facing you. The cops were also in dispair and wanted to catch this guys. I know what you are talking about because my girlfriend is the same way "why doesnt she shoot him?!" "call for back up dumbass"

I think this movie was great. I just like putting my self on their position and think: "shit I would of never thought about that"
Don\'t try to confuse me with what you call  facts, my mind is already made up.

No because she\'s hot, and because I love that movie, but from a non bias view I think they\'re even.

Anyways I watched it tonight and I think it was a great movie, the twist at the end should be reason enough to watch. I will say however some of the emotional parts were just too dragged out and it sorta made it cheesy at certain times, but the suspense and overall gore/shock factor was all I asked for.

Definatly a movie I\'ll be buying on DVD.

Heard mixed things about it. Heard it is the second coming of the serial killer films (ala Se7en) but I have also heard the film lacks any sort of depth to it. Will see it, probably the same day I see \'Ray\'.

The movie was pretty good and there was some goofy acting that didnt quite fit the seriousness of the movie but overall it was neat. I dont know what you think in depth is but its just right for those that dont want to think too much and those that like semi complicated films. Its hard to talk about without giving away too much.

I just so happened to see it in one of the nicer ghettoplexes (sorta), and when things started to get heated even the prepy loyola students etc were getting rowdy and saying shit. It was basically the whole theater (including myself and a few friends) so it wasnt too bad (except for some stupid ass chicks in the corner screaming at the dumbest shit.

Perhaps it was the environment but it was worth the money (something like 5 bux. Though i would have payed a standard rate to see it).

[SP] Ginko is kinda right in most cases. But they couldnt have called back up because they were there without a warrant. Perhaps that doesnt matter but it was an intense point. We were all saying shoot the bastard (the guy and zepp), but of course they didnt. The twist was definately kool.[/SP]

I was expecting it to be crap, but the film was worthwhile.  The script was good, and the story was moderately rewarding.  It was not just a valueless exploitation film.

Did anyone notice that the guy who played Adam was the screenwriter Leigh Whannell?

The main problems I had with it were:

[sp]
1.  Carey Elwes and Danny Glover.  I won\'t go into details, but the film would have been much better with skilled but unknown actors.  When I see Carey Elwes, I remember that he\'s faking an american accent, and when I see Danny Glover, I think of the Lethal Weapons movies.  It can\'t be helped.  They are not good enough actors to transcend their resume.  Also, I don\'t think their name values added much to the film\'s marketing.

2.  The flashbacks with all the high speed shots and frame-by-frame editing were very weak.  Basically I think the film could have been a little longer and accomodated longer scene sequences to describe the other murders.  Those scenes were probably hacked down to their present size strictly to shorten the film and increase the number of presentations per day.

3.  Why did Danny Glover and Ken Leung not get a warrant to search the warehouse?  My god, that was so incredibly stupid.  Why bother to check the place if you can\'t use any of the evidence you find there due to an improper search?  They were not running against any clock to save someone.  I just remember saying to myself a great big "WTF???" when I heard "screw the search warrant" or whatever Danny Glover said.[/sp]

Saw sequel set for next Halloween...

Quote
November 02, 2004 - Lions Gate Films has given the go-ahead for a sequel to the disturbing thriller Saw.  The film, which is tells the bloody tale of a twisted psychopath\'s murderous cat and mouse games, opened in third place this weekend with $18.3 million.

The studio announced today that the sequel is tentatively set for a Halloween 2005 release.

Tom Ortenberg, President of Lions Gate Films says, "We were confident going into this weekend as the only new horror release that we would hit our target audience of genre fans, but this has exceeded all our expectations.  With Saw, James Wan and Leigh Whannell have tapped into filmgoers\' most base fears and have created something that people immediately feel they need to talk about with others, and see again to catch clues they may have missed the first time."

"We are thrilled about the strong opening weekend of Saw. Lions Gate\'s marketing and distribution team has done a phenomenal job and we\'re very excited to be partnering with them again on Saw 2," say producers Burg, Koules and Hoffman.

Saw, directed by 27-year-old James Wan and written by 27-year-old co-star Leigh Whannell, stars Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Monica Potter, Dina Meyer, Ken Leung and Leigh Whannell.
