Question about Mobo and Processor swap

I have a P4 2.4 OC 2.97 and my mobo is a ASUS P4PE 533 FSB.  I am wanting to upgrade to a better 800 FSB Mobo and a 3.0 or higher CPU.  

Question:  Must I reinstall WinXP?  It is a royal pain in the ass and I don\'t want to have to delete all my games and reinstall them.

you basically set every driver you can to a generic one and remove every driver for USB & AGP and then swap your hardware.  Once you reboot windows should start finding the new hardware and/or you can install the correct drivers.

I also think you can just put in your new hardware and then boot using your xp disc, then just click on repair and everything should be fine.  May be a bit less hassle, but let me know which way you do it and how it goes.

Nice find Jbean!  Since my mouse and keyboard are USB I guess I shouldn\'t uninstall those.  I am wondering though if I must uninstall my Audigy drivers?  And if I reboot after uninstalling every driver won\'t my computer automatically detect the devices I just uninstalled before I have a chance to yank the mobo and processor out?

It actually seems much easier to just install the new hardware and boot using your XP disc.  There will be an option to repair xp, doing that seems to clear out all the uneeded drivers and seems really simple.  Only downside is you have to re-download all of the windows updates, but that\'s not a bad trade off.

They talk about it further down in that link I showed you.  People have gone P4 to AMD and back using this method.

Thanks, I am not making the Intel to AMD leap, but would still like it be as problem free as possible.  So basically - turn off the machine - take out the old hardware - put it all back together - put my XP CD in and let it go from there?

yeah, and there will be an option to repair an existing install.  The only downside to this method is having to get all the updates again, but it\'s pretty fool proof from what I can see.

My friend just swapped his mobo out without doing anything.  Upon next reboot he was asked for new drivers to all the new devices on the motherboard.  Popped in the included mobo CD and installed everything, worked fine.

From what I understand, XP is kind of finky. Sometimes it will require it and sometimes it won\'t. If you do a lot of upgrades, chances are it will require it.

Any tidbit of info helps, WinXP is definitely finnicky so I\'d prolly take JBean\'s advice over mine.

Do it the proper way, reinstall.  You may find it\'ll work fine for awhile, but you will start to notice problems, you can even make your system slower then it would be on a reinstall.

that indeed is possible.  although every system setup is unique, so there is no easy way that will work the same for each of our machines.

I\'m curious to see how it works out though giga.

Well I am going with an Asus mobo - which I have now - and a higher speed P4.  I am hoping this will work.  Once I get around to doing it I will post my results though it may take me until the holidays when I have enough time.

Did the mobo proc swap - just didn\'t keep the same HD\'s - I went from IDE to SATA drives.  So I didn\'t try the experiment.

I did, and it worked pretty well.  I didn\'t do a reinstall of XP, just reused my old hard drive on my new A64 system and it booted up just fine.  Only thing was my drivers for my hardware were conflicting a little, but XP pro was totally usable.

I did some backups of my vital stuff.  Then did a total format and re-installation of XP pro.
