New PS2 Overheating!?
« on: November 10, 2004, 05:29:59 PM »
I purchased the new PS2 over the past weekend. And it\'s shut down on me during gameplay twice now. What has happened is it will shut down and the red sleep mode light will flash. Now it has no fan and could be a serious problem with all of them. They become really hot after hours of gameplay. I called the place where I bought it and they told me to get in touch with Sony because they haven\'t heard of it yet. Now I\'m severly pissed off here because I just traded in my immaculate XBOX for this.

Has anyone faced this problem?

Take it back, don\'t let them give u a "call sony" bs. They\'re liable for the problem, its their job to send it to sony or call sony (whatever the f@#k they do)

take it back to the shop and show them the problem. If you bought it from them, they have to deal with it.

yes, any average store should replace it with a new one

Assuming the store you bought it at has a 30 day return policy then take it back there, if not I think you might have to take it to Sony unless you got a product replacement plan or whatever the hell they call that warranty they offer.

Did you buy an extra warranty on it?  This is Sony we\'re talking about.  I think Circuit City has the best warranty policies, I buy all my electronics there.

Actually,

the new PStwo console DOES have a fan. It\'s totally concealed internally, so you probably can\'t see it.

Anyway, usual guidelines are of course to not place the console in some drawer or cupboard while playing. Never put it on a carpet.

Of course, I suggest you have the store replace it.

That\'s weird, I never thought it had a fan, either. There\'s no vent, right? I\'ll have to look. I hope you weren\'t kidding and then I\'m wasting my time, heh.

Solrac.

My PSTwo hasn\'t had any problems like that. Something like three hours straight of GTA is probably the max that I might have used it so far.

Yeah, some gamesite.... Gamespy I believe (not sure though), had pictures of the PStwo internals.

The fan is positioned parralel to the disc drive and it\'s very flat of course. It makes sense of course. No passive cooling heatsink would be effective/sufficient in that small cramped space.

*pats first shipment PS2 from 2000* Still running strong, except those disc read errors that involved me opening the damn thing. After I fixed the laser height, she worked like a dream :)

Same here...I\'ve had my PS2 forever, and nothing has gone wrong...except it just renectly stopped reading discs, so I bought one of those lens cleaners and now it works great.

1. *lol* @ Nathan
2. Where is Clyde ??? I miss that chimp ! ;)
3. I doubt that it is an overheating probl. because the powersupply is not inside the PS2... the CPU is only getting warm, but not hot !

Best way to fix this?
Cut a new spot for a 120MM fan.
Take out the old fan.
Hook up the big fan.
If that doesn\'t work, try cooling with dry ice.
You also need some bling-bling lights, that helps with the cooling.
