PS2 slim as CD/DVD source
« on: December 18, 2004, 11:23:47 AM »
Hi folks,

I\'m thinking of replacing my crappy old DVD player with a slim PS2. I have some questions for those of you using it in their stereo system.

1) Seamless audio playback of CDs (like chemical bros, pink floyd) - can it handle gapless playback of audio CDs?

2) If a DVD or CD is on pause, how long until it turns off? Does it remember the location?

3) With fast forward on DVD, do you have options like 2x, 4x, 8x, etc?

4) How is the Dolby on optical out?

5) Anyone have any luck using a universal/programmable remote?

I appreciate the help..

1) Not sure but I think it does...

2) No idea.... But I wouldn\'t advise th PS2 cd player interface \'burning in\' too long on your tv screen.

3) Sorry, no clue about that either.

4) How is the Dolby on optical out? - GREAT imho. I have mine hooked up to an external Creative Extigy Soundblaster. The audio cd sound output of the PS2 slimline is imo better than that of the \'old\' PS2. It sure as hell beats the Xbox\'s optical output.

5) Haven\'t tried it yet, even though I have my 3rd party remote around somewhere.

I wouldnt recommend a PS2 as a replacement to a DVD player.First of all unlike many new good DVD players its not multi region.Secondly you should know that the PS2 sometimes has issues with some DVDs.
I dont know how good the drivers are in the newer slim model but I sometimes have trouble playing some DVDs on my PS2 and I am not the only one. They may skip, or my PS2 may be unable to read the disk in the middle of the movie and others wont play at all.Its not a very common phenomenon.Very few movies have such issues but when it comes to movies a DVD player is far more reliable.
Unlike DVD players it cant play video cds and generally other video formats that arent for DVD movies
Also judging from my experience a DVD player\'s menu is more convenient.

But if you arent very serious about watching movies and you want a PS2 for general gaming/movie entertainment then purchasing the slim model will be a good choice.

If you arent much into games and you are mostly into movies I suggest a DVD player

Yes

2) If a DVD or CD is on pause, how long until it turns off? Does it remember the location?

It takes a while I left it for anbout 10 minutes the other day watching hellboy because I had dinner and it didnt turn off. I turned the TV off so prevent any burn in though.

3) With fast forward on DVD, do you have options like 2x, 4x, 8x, etc?

2x 4x and 8x

4) How is the Dolby on optical out?

It\'s craptastic, and I mean that in a good way.

5) Anyone have any luck using a universal/programmable remote?

good luck trying. Bite the bullet and pay the extra 5 bucks for a sony ps2 dvd remote.

I\'m very happy with my new Sony DVD player (aka PS2 slim version). I am able to use my universal remote with it by assigning it generic sony dvd player.

Sweet!

Wow, that\'s a cool tip about the universal remote.  Makes me want to try that with mine. I can never remember what the controller buttons do.

well I just got burned, has to be with only the new version since you dont need the plug in adaptor and cd to store the info on the mem. card.

Oh well I still love my new dvd remtoe I got with slim ps2, turns the ps2 on and off at my disposal ;)
