Video card cooling
« on: December 28, 2004, 11:12:53 AM »
I just removed my shitty ass cooling contraption from my BFG 6800GT (the kind with the 2 small fans), and put a new NV Silencer 5 on.  It was a little nerve racking removing it from such an expensive piece of hardware (and voiding the warranty to boot).

I did it because my temps were way to high IMO.  Idle was hovering around 54C and load was getting up to around 85C!  So I applied my thermal goo to my memory and GPU and tested it out.

*Idle of 54C went to 42C

*Load of 85C went down to 68C!

I must have had some bad contact with the stock heatsink, but I am much happier now that I can achieve a more stable overclock.  Not to mention how much quieter it became.

How hot does your GPU get?

Idles at 50C and tops at 60C under load.  I have an eVGA 6800 GT with one fan.  Your BFG is OC\'d from the factory though...

I got Gainward golden sample GT.

factory speeds are 400/1100 although you can set to \'safe settings\' which clock 350/1000 in case of troubles.

400/1100 idles at about 41 to 45 celcius, load 59

350/1000 idles at about 38 to 44 celcius.

the dual fan construction with copper heatsink work great.
bit noisy though even at dynamic fanspeeds.

I\'ve been thinking of getting rid of my standard nVidia heatsink.

The nVidia software says the temp right now (just played some NS) is 53-54C (really, can the GPU take 145C before having to shut down? That’s what the nvidia software says), the only thing Im worried about is extra noise.. How much more noise does your new heat sinks add?

I remember when I got a new cooler for my GF4 4200, even though I got one of the more expensive coolers, it added quite a lot of noise.
