clips - we already have plans to invade Iran and if we did, we would go in and destroy their atomic program and leave.  No occupation.  That is if we did it in a unilateral way.  If the UN gets involved - it will be another Iraq with far less US troops involved in the aftermath.

Yeah.  It would be a quicky for the US, but it would still be expensive.

so you honestly think it would be that easy?...i think the u.s. has learned it\'s lesson from iraq, not to mention, do you really think iran would  just let the u.s. walk quietly all over them? even if done unilaterly that would just cause another uproar in the arab world...also i think iran has threatned to lob some missles at israel if attacked....with everything that\'s goin on in iraq, i feel the u.s. is seriously bluffing on this one...

Iraq had a bigger army than Iran.  I can\'t believe you are implying that we had a difficult time with Iraq , by saying we learned our lesson.

Iran\'s military is nothing compared to ours.  A massive air campaign by the US would decimate their military.  Saddam shot missles at Israel as well to no effect.  If they did indeed do that - expect the Israeli airforce to make short work of Iran\'s missle launching sites.

I don\'t think the US is bluffing in the least - we have an army there already, but I do think it is a last resort.  Oh and Iranians aren\'t Arab.

Expanding on the issue...

Considering their best equipment is what we left behind--and most of it was destroyed in thier "war" with Iraq--what do they plan to throw at us?  Their air-defense capabilities are almost non-existant, the same with its ground forces.  Below is thier basic Order of Battle:

Four Armored Divisions
= 3 Armored + 1 Mech Brigades + Arty Brigade with four or five artillery battalions

Six Infantry Divisions
= Four Infantry Brigades + 1 Arty Brigade (Same)

One Airborne Brigade
Two Commando Brigades
Several Independent Brigades (Armored, Infantry)
Five Artillery Brigades (same)

1565 Tanks, including T-54/66 and PRC T-59, 65 T-62,480 T-72, 200 Chieftan, 150 M-47/47, 150 M-60 and 10 Iranian Zulfiqar. T-54/55/59 should total about 510 machines.

APC: 500 BTR 50/60, 250 M-113, 10 Boragh
AFIV: 350 BMP-1, 400 BMP-2
Arty: Towed and SP: Russian, Chinese, North Korean, and American, many types

Air Order of Battle
Bomber
SU-24 Fencer

Fighter
F-14 Tomcat
F-5E Tiger II (F-5E/F)
MiG-19 Farmer
MiG-29 Fulcrum
F-4 Phantom II
F-7/J-7 Airguard (J-7II)
Su-17/20/22 Fitter (Su-22)
Su-25 Frogfoot

Helicopter
UH-1 Huey
206 Jet Ranger
AH-1 Cobra
CH-47 Chinook
CH-53 Super Stallion
Model 214ST

Special
P-3 Orion

Trainer
T-33 Shooting Star
EMB-312 Tucano
PC-7 Turbo Trainer

Transport
C-130 Hercules
IL-76 Candid
Y-11 / Y12
Turbo Commander 690B
An-72A Coaler

Considering Iran\'s best strategy was human wave assults, I imagine we\'ll be retaking our embassy in less than 2 weeks if hostilities break out....

They warn us to not play with fire?  Aren\'t they forgetting that the army they fought for 8 years and couldn\'t gain any ground on was the same one we rolled over in less than 2 weeks?

Further proof clips that we are looking into pounding Iran:

Cat and mouse game over Iran
By Richard Sale

The U.S. Air Force is playing a dangerous game of cat and mouse with Iran\'s ayatollahs, flying American combat aircraft into Iranian airspace in an attempt to lure Tehran into turning on air defense radars, thus allowing U.S. pilots to grid the system for use in future targeting data, administration officials said.

"We have to know which targets to attack and how to attack them," said one, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The flights, which have been going on for weeks, are being launched from sites in Afghanistan and Iraq and are part of Bush administration attempts collect badly needed intelligence on Iran\'s possible nuclear weapons development sites, these sources said, speaking on condition of strict anonymity.

"These Iranian air defense positions are not just being observed, they\'re being \'templated,\'" an administration official said, explaining that the flights are part of a U.S. effort to develop "an electronic order of battle for Iran" in case of actual conflict.

i never stated the u.s. had a difficult time with iraq, as a matter a of fact i don\'t think anyone denied the fact that we would defeat them..my reason for saying that the u.s. has learned their lesson is that in which the way they implemented the war in iraq...everybody always states.."we will defeat them with our superior air power"..that is true but at some point you have to put ground troops in there to clean up the mess...

i read your 2nd post after this one regarding the report about flights over iran and such...if the u.s. are truly thinkin of doing another pre-emptive attack, i think it would be poor judgement on thier part,..i just don\'t see them bombing targets in iran, then gettin the hell outa there, with iran not responding in some fashion...

the only way i see the u.s. doing this is unilaterly like you stated, but only with countries like germany china & russia involved, or have it set up with sanctions in which everyone will be in agreement with it..then i guess i can see the u.s. bombing iran in a similar fashion in the way they used to bomb strategic targets in iraq.....

oh one last detail...for the sake of agrument, let\'s just say i like to call those people in that part of the world arabs...

IRANIANS ARE PERSIANS YOU GIMP! If you call them anything else, people will say you\'re an ignorant racist and anything you say isn\'t worth listening to at all. But other than that, I\'m mainly on your side of the argument.

Before people make any comparisons with the Iraqi Army of the 1980\'s and the Iraqi Army of 2003, they should remember the 1990\'s - where the Iraqi Army was severely weakenned by a decade of sactions and bombings. If the US goes into Iran now, it\'ll be a lot harder.

lah.
