PS2s are built like shit.

Aside from buying a real DVD player, you can always try this.

Especially if it\'s giving you a disc read error.

There are several reasons why won\'t it work:

-the quality of your dvd burner
-the quality of the blank disc
-disc is faulty or you burned it wrong...

lets talk about the quality of your dvd burner.  This is pretty important, if you have crappy dvd burner with crappy laser, then even if you burn on quality blank disc, the errors and the failures is still too high for the playstation 2 to read it.  the playStation 2 is so picky that it won\'t read any disc with  PIE (parity inner error) higher than 50ish on the beginning of the disc, while decent dvd player can disc with PIE of 280 and better ones can read up to 900ish of PIE, it seems like newer playStation 2 models are more tolerance of this and it seems to have better quality laser...The other thing is PIF (parity inner failures), for the disc to be good, it should have no higher than 4 for PIF.

Many known dvd burners usually updated their firmware.  If your blank disc media burn out kinda crappy or realy crappy quality, by  just download the new firmware update your dvd burner and flash it, chances are it will improve the quality so much that it can be readable on your playstation 2.  The quality can be so improved that its can be comparable to Industry Pressed DVD.  I know this since before I update to its newest firmware, it was readable on my playstation 2, but near the end of the disc, the errors become higher than it should be that the picky playstation played with skipping and freezing images.  After I update the firmware, the burner burnts a much better quality out of the blank disc.  The firmware upgrade usually improve media burning quality and compatibility with a variety of blank disc such as newer blank disc that were made after the burner.

The other reasons could be:

-disc is faulty or doesn\'t follow DVD Video specification standard...

-maybe you didn\'t burn it as a DVD Video specification standard for its to be compatible with DVD players.

-booktype setting.  If you have DVD+Rs, DVD+RWs, DVD+R Dual layers.  Change its booktype settings From DVD+R to DVD-ROM so it will be compatible with all dvd players.  the DVD Forum chooses the DVD-Rs as the standard for dvd recording, so some dvd players may not support "+" media.  But rest your mind as you can change its booktype setting to DVD-ROM as pressed DVD video are DVD-ROM format.

You can change the booktype setting by using Nero CD/DVD speed or by using KProbe.  There are other software that let you change booktype setting for the "+" media.

Download this Nero CD/DVD Speed software if you haven\'t.  Its only 530 Kbytes, uses very little space.

But my old playstation 2 support both the + and the - medias.  But, I still prefer changing the booktype setting to DVD-ROM for all DVD+R/+RW/DL media for compatibility with all dvd players.

okay let me try one more time,

makes sure your dvd burner updated their firmware and hopefully its a good quality burner.  If you uses the "+" media, I prefer to change its booktype setting from DVD+R or DVD+RW or DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM as this will makes it compatible with any dvd players that doesn\'t support the + media.

There.:D

I guess maybe your friend\'s memory card have this "new firmware update" that makes your friend\'s playStation 2 more tolerance of errors and failures.  He probably have a software that have the "new" firmware upgrade.

If your method of copying your friend\'s firmware off his memory card to your doesn\'t work.

Try copying his firmware upgrade software cd.

By that, just borrow his disc and burn a copy of it, then put it in the playStation 2 and it will upgrade the firmware and save it into your memory card.

I just flashed my liteon sohw-812S to a sohw-832S.

What does this mean, i can now burn onto dual layer dvds. Although they cost shitloads atm.

ask your friend that have the new firmware for his memory card.  Ask him if he had that firmware upgrade CD...
