Now, to some rumours!
EGM printed this in their latest issue under the rumour section:

Change of plans. After seeing PS3\'s power several big-time gamemakers have moved projects from XBOX 360 to PS3

And PSM wrote this short peice.

One of the next-generation Playstation project from the beginning has been computing giant IBM. They helped co-design the system\'s integral Cell CPU with SCEI, but as PSM has learned from development sources, their involvement is extending way past the deal.

In fact the latest version of the Playstation 3 development kit, as of this writing, is built around a custom Cell-based PC created by engineers at IBM. The system has a single Cell processor rather than multiple G5 chips some have speculated it would, and runs a custom Linux-based operating system designed by Sony Computer Entertainment and mention at last E3.

At present, the kit has two top-of-the-line NVIDIA graphics cards running in tandem (SLI) and even then, one source tells us it\'s "not even scratching the surface of what PS3 will be able to do visually.

Sony has been awful quiet about the whole PS3 stuff so we are just going to have to feed off rumours for now, I hope they show us some really great stuff during E3.

That reminds me, I have to sign up for GameSpot Complete, or is IGN Insider a better choice nowadays? Are they showing the live feed from the press conferences?

EGM is nothing more than toilet paper.  You should be ashamed for quoting anything from them.

As for the "orders of magnitude" stronger than Xbox 360...that was written quite a while ago; one we don\'t know who it\'s from (credibility?), and two the sdk\'s for either system weren\'t finished yet.

Personally couldn\'t give a rats ass about what these companies say. It\'s the final product that will get my attention.  Hype sucks ass!   I\'ve seen this shit happen with every console release.

Toshiba demonstrated that its Cell microprocessor, jointly developed with the Sony Group and IBM Corp., can simultaneously decode 48 SDTV format MPEG-2 streams. At the COOL Chips VIII event held in Yokohama from April 20 to 22, 2005, the company showed a film demonstrating the decoding process.

In the film, 48 MPEG-2 streams stored on a HDD were read, decoded and projected onto a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display divided into 8 x 6 cells, each of which showed a different video in each cell. The company expects the technology to be used to display thumbnails for a video list. Of the eight synergistic processor elements (SPE) used in the Cell, six are used for decoding 48 MPEG-2 streams and one is used for scaling the screen. The remaining SPE can be used for a completely different processing function.

I read a while ago two things that support what EGM and PSM have written.

The first was some news bit about British (?) developers receiving PS3 devkits, one of them said that even the alpha version of the PS3 devkit were more powerful than the Xbox 2 devkit they had (but he also said that they were expecting a newer version of the Xbox 2 devkit).

On the bright side, I got word from an engineer type who had a chance to go hands on with the PS3 recently in Japan. He says that it knocked his shoes off. Unfortunately, being a hardcore engineer, he was completely oblivious to things like what it looked like and what cool features it has. I do think he wants to marry it s pretty, pretty architecture and loves the amped-up processing. From his brief note, it sounds like he thinks it will be significantly more powerful than the Xbox 360, but we all know processing power alone does not spell gaming dominance.

Also the EGM editor confirmed \'hype 1\' (Change of plans) on a forum according to one poster at GamingAge.

All of these seem to support each other, I guess we will see if they are real in just 13 days. Cant wait!

The Xbox is supposed to be shown on May the 12th via MTV I think, not sure which time though. I’ll be fun to compare them on May the 16th.

I just want to know what scale this Mr. Joe Editor was using when he made that statement.  I don\'t doubt the PS3 to be stronger, but "orders of magnitude"?  Please, stick to writing crappy reviews.

When i started reading that my true colors started showing. Got me a little giddy there for a second.

Really im all about competition and i cant lie and say that the xbox blows or some shit like that. Im trying not to get my hopes up really. Its obvious since half of this crap ive never even seen (heard of).

Obviously it will not be order of magnitude, that’s a figure of speech as far as I know (don’t kill me if I\'m wrong! Swingrish is my 2nd language).
Order of magnitude is something like ten times with each step?

Anyway, another rumour surfaced on one of the sites I linked to, it said the GPUs in PS3 and X2 are about equal in terms of power, but the difference is in the CPUs where the PS3 outperformes the X2 CPU threefold!
From that I gather at B3D this isnt really news though, they claim they have known this for a long time (comparing the theoretical FLOPS?)
