Disc Drives and Warranties
« on: May 17, 2005, 06:59:59 AM »
OK, I have a seagate drive that has gone down on me (For lack of a better term)

It\'s an external drive.

I need what\'s on the disc.

They are warrantying the disc drive, but not the info that is on it.

WHAT???

Are you fucking kidding me?>

So I can own the hard drive, but I\'m not allowed to put anything on it.

They want to charge me to pull the info off the drive.

Now, I have a hunch the problem is my controller in the box.  The drive may be just fine and dandy.

Can I pull this drive out of the case and try it in a way that they won\'t stick two fingers up the poop shoot when I go to claim warranty by saying I tampered with it?

What a racket.  I want to build a safe.  A very large safe where people can put lots of valuable shit in it.  THen I am going to make the lock so it only works for 6 months.  Then I\'ll give htem a new safe when they complain about the lock being broken, but if they want their shit back they are going to have to pay!!!

Damn.  Try slapping the drive in another compy and see if it can see it.

And remember the freezer trick. :)  But before you do that try OnTrack EasyRecovery.  It saw my drive fine even though Windows didn\'t.

ps- the drive was only 6mo old??

THEY WANT 500 dollars MINIMUM to get the data off my disc!!!

What\'s ontrack easy recovery?

Would this work with USB or firewire seeing as to how the computer isn\'t liking either of them?

If you can\'t recover the data yourself, I would not let Seagate touch it.  Considering the low cost of hard drives these days, the value of the warranty replacement is meaningless compared to the value of the data.

I would take it to an independent company for data recovery, and screw the warranty claim.  It may cost you a lot less than Seagate\'s quote, especially if it\'s only a minor problem like you suspected.

Data recovery usually starts at $500-$700 and I got quoted $1300 from a company that wanted to recover my 120gb maxtor.

It\'s a bitch, but they have to take time in a special room to pry it apart and worky on it.  You\'re paying for manual labor, use of special equipment, and their expertise.

Vid- I\'ll PM you something special in a moment.

Yeah, but it may not even be any "expertise".

If it\'s just the USB/FIrewire controller and not the drive, then my pet monkey could do it.

vid so let me get this straight:

It\'s an SATA drive, your motherboard only has IDE ports so you have a PCI controller card so your HD can work. (?)

You\'re concerned the controller card is screwed?  Have you gone to the manuf\'ers website to see if it has new drivers?  Windows update?  etc...

vid, pop it open set the jumper to slave and put it inside your pc
i\'ve been messin\' with swaping drives in externals and if the drive its self is okay you should have no problem and if it is a controller problem buy a generic externel kit and put the hard drive in there they only run 20-30$

thanks ian.  That makes sense.

My computer is fine.  I think it\'s the external box that\'s messed up that changes the IDE drive for USB2 or firewire.

I have another one being sent to me.  I spoke to the biggest idiot.  Has to be from India.

He told me I had to send my drive back before they sent me the new one.  I was like, "Um, I don\'t think so.  I need a drive at my door tomorrow."  "It\'s your piece of crap drive that has 200 gigs of video work on it that fucked up."

He then told me that for 25 bucks he would send one out right away with a return label enclosed or for free he will send me one and I will have to take care of shipping.

Um, I can ship that thing to them for 5 bucks.  Why in the hell would I pay 25 bucks?  THey are sending me packaging with the new one the are sending anyway.  Whatever.  THey are douchebags.

So as of now I am going to take my drive out and hook it up and pray.  If it works then I am going to transfer it over to the new drive when I get it, pack it up and ship it to them.  If they have a problem with me opening their box then they can ship it right back to me and I will use it in another computer.
