Cored as you can imagine the ipod userbase is huge.  Whatever possibility you\'d want or imagine, it exists.

I use JHymn to strip all my songs of DRM.  Transferring and playing songs to other PCs, as well as using exotic music players to play the files is a breeze.

You need to use iTunes to transfer songs because it has some neat proprietary tags (which I know you\'ll make fun of anyway) that allow you to view cover art, full screen, on an ipod photo, give each song a preset EQ setting that the ipod will automatically switch to when played, volume adjustment, individual song ratings, customizable options when to begin playing a certian track (as well as ending it early), and more stuff I probably don\'t even know about.

I know you\'ll still hate ipods no matter what, but it\'s nice to be informed before making assumptions. :)

I already knew about the custom tags because I used iTunes as an mp3 player on my PC for a while.  Later, when my music folder grew larger, iTunes started performing like crap.  Even when no other apps were competing for resources, it would stutter on playback.  iTunes didn\'t like LARGE mp3 files, such as high fixed bitrate files.  It seems to be optimized for Apple\'s proprietary standard, which is no surprise.

I do like the coverart feature, and I wish my iRiver supported it because it has a color display.  However, I never used the preset EQ, song ratings, etc.

ah we\'re making progress you actually said something positive about the ipod.

The other features I mentioned are pretty much useless to me too, except for the song rating system.  I have tons of crap loaded up on my ipod, including Arnold Schwarzeneggar prank calls, Joe Pesci, Frank Rizzo, Al Pacino, etc... As well as other misc items like Jim Gaffigan stand-up, Chris Rock.  I rate their best material the highest so when I put it on random I have a better chance of listening to the good stuff.

You are remarkably protective of the IPod.

If I\'m not allowed to snidely criticize overmarketed yuppized consumer products, then what\'s the point of this whole forum?  I am not the worst offender when it comes to lurching off topic.

Hey, when 99% of us own an ipod, it means you *gotta* get an ipod.  Simple as that.

ive been using itunes for a while and my song database is located on my media server(another computer with lots of hard drive space in my entertainment center)
when i try to connect to it using the shared library or pointing it to a mapped network drive the performance is horrible
does anyone know of a full featured mp3 player with good ID3 tag editing abilities that isnt itunes?

I want to know how iTunes "performed like crap"? I have used it on my iMac (OS X) and my Win XP machine, both have almost every cd I own on the HD (around 300 +) and never had a single problem with iTunes. Sounds more like a  problem with your PC and not iTunes.

Let it go guys...just an MP3 player. We can measure the length of our insecurity dicks on a more important subject.
Who is this anamoly we call Jumpman? How is he able to do what he does and still survive after years of torment? It seems he feeds on the hate, growing with an intense passion to put unassuming members in their place.

Were your CDs ripped in the apple proprietary file format, or in mp3 format?  I think that is the key difference.

I\'m guessing you have approximately 3500 files, based on the number of CDs you mentioned.  I probably have more, approximately 4,500 - 5,000 files.  All are mp3s ripped with various codecs.

My PC is very stable with other memory-intensive activities, but running iTunes with that many mp3 files seems to cripple it.
