PS3 was briefly avaible off amazon.com for $299.99

So when the 360 announcements came out last month, amazon.com briefly put the PS3 up with a price.   The current link.  Although the current link now reads unavailable, leave email for info... perhaps the PS3 is not going to be the massive wallet-buster that Sony has been hinting at for a while.  If sony could make back a loss through peripheral sales and dominate the market by low-balling this system, perhaps they are considering this price...

PS - Although this is old news (mid August), I didn\'t see anything about it in the forum, so I thought I would mention it.

Amazon might have set up a template page and posted it by accident. I doubt Sony gives Amazon advance prices just for fun.

What was interesting is that they put the price up on the SAME day as the XBOX release price and date anouncements were made...  So at the time, there was speculation that Sony might be moving to take a way some of their thunder.

or...Sony are thinking to release an underpowered console 6-10 months later than XBox 360 ??? ...just to be destroyed ??

I wonder how much PS3 software developing costs would compare to X360\'s taking into consideration Middlware and OpenGL available tools provided for PS3 and the Middleware and Xenon tools provided for XBOX360

I dont see the big deal over it. Cell and Blu-Ray are both planned to become mass-market hardware type thing. What if sony loose 100$ per Cell next  year, but put cell into their next Blu-Ray-DVD player and sell them higher then they should to refill they bank ?

The only component they have no power over is the RSX and they most likely have longtherm contract .

 Well it is a very low launch price still.If they can cover it up in the long term that is a different issue and not a certain one and usually its wise to overestimate future possible losses and underestimate possible profits and present actions should reflect that future possibility.
  Planning for such a low price before the console is even released is something unexpected, and highly risky since there is an uncertainty of how well things will go in the future.

My suitemate and I had a debate a couple days ago. He said PS3 has no chance against Xbox 360. I then countered him with the 3 consoles that Microsoft will release and if he wants the good one, he\'ll be paying what PS3 most likely will cost and PS3 has more features in it. Shwing
