i remember buying FF8 back in oct/nov 1999.  I also remember seeing DC launch in 1999 when I just started a few days of my sophomore year in high school.  But I didn\'t thought about it that time that FF8 purposedly launch on September 1999 as to draw crowds away from Sega DC.  Until you guys mention it and you have a point there.

Either way, even if FF8 wasn\'t launch on that day, i still won\'t buy DC.  Years later, I remember DC was selling for only $50, but i still didn\'t buy it because I guess what games will make me interested in getting a DC anyway?  The graphic is superior than PSOne which probably drop their price down to $50 around that time too.  But unfortunatedly, I didn\'t even get one even though its very cheap for a console.

It was a comment made in jest. I was simply saying that most of the FF8 sales was by people who had no interest in the DC. People who had interest in the DC was spending money on the DC that day.

what i said was that I have no interested in getting a DC because it doesn\'t have the games I like, unlike PS2 where Sony knows how to hype it up and lure buyers like me to get one as soon as possible.  It have features that really got me interested such as backward compatible with PSOne games, DVD playback and lastly but not least, the hype emotion engine and graphic synthesizer.

Sony planned to hit DC with FF8 obviously but I dont think the DC hurt FF8\'s sales or FF8 hurt DC\'s sales.

Many people who could afford easily both bought both.A happy PS owner who was interested on the DC cared for FF8 too.It had nothing to do with fanboyism or anything.

Nobody can jump to such conclusions and be sure about them.A PS owner who bought FF8 but not a DC didnt necessarily mean that he wasnt planning to purchase a DC in the future.

FF8 was supposed to be an AAA title and it was usual to expect people to buy it when it was released for their already purchased console.Especially when considering that PS had built a userbase of millions of gamers that wanted to get the best as possible for their already purchased console.

Most people that bought FF8 were already PS owners. They didnt buy a PS with FF8 while DC was available. The latter were few.

You cant say "people bought FF8 instead of a DC".The appearance of a new console doesnt reduce people\'s interest on games for their previous console. They can have interest on both

You guys are missing the point, a game doesnt have to do bad for its sales to be hurt.

All he is saying that is if FF8 was released at a different time it would of sold more games on it\'s release date.
1.FF7
  2. Grandia
  3. MGS
Is it me? Or does PSone own all the other systems?

There\'s no way of predicting that.

Call it speculation, I call it common sense.

Common sense dicates that if people are more interested and focused on GAME A OR SYSTEM A, then GAME B or SYSTEM B, then GAME A OR SYSTEM A will do better than GAME B OR SYSTEM B. All i am saying is the gaming world was focused on the DC instead of FF8.

Why are you turning this into some kind of math-like equation? It\'s speculation.

Only way to put any kind of credibility to this discussion is through statistics. You can\'t use common sense as proof.

And even statistics makes huge mistakes. My professor told me "there are lies, big lies and statistics" or something like that :p

Anyways typical logic or common sense is often wrong because there is no real definition of whats logical or not. Many people conclude according to what they have experienced only but unfortunately thats a small part compared to what hasnt been observed/noticed/experienced.
Especially when it comes to economics and consumer behaviour on the surface someone who uses only common sense/typical logic might expect different results/estimates than the real realisation or sometimes find the wrong explanations for the outcome of the result.

A speculation uses common sense anyways. But common sense is not necessarily correct.
