US security chief strives to expel all illegal immigrants

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said his department aims without exception to expel all those who enter the United States illegally.

"Our goal at DHS (Homeland Security) is to completely eliminate the \'catch and release\' enforcement problem, and return every single illegal entrant, no exceptions.

"It should be possible to achieve significant and measurable progress to this end in less than a year," Chertoff told a Senate hearing.

Thousands of "Mexicans who are caught entering the United States illegally are returned immediately to Mexico. But other parts of the system have nearly collapsed under the weight of numbers. The problem is especially severe for non-Mexicans apprehended at the southwest border," Chertoff explained.

"Today, a non-Mexican illegal immigrant caught trying to enter the United States across the southwest border has an 80 percent chance of being released immediately because we lack the holding facilities," he added.

"Through a comprehensive approach, we are moving to end this \'catch and release\' style of border enforcement by reengineering our detention and removal process."

Chertoff\'s remarks in favor of returning "every illegal entrant, no exceptions" appeared to conflict directly with the US policy toward illegal Cuban migrants.

Though Cubans picked up at sea are returned to their country, those who reach US soil by air, sea or ground are allowed to stay and work -- a fact Cuba says encourages dangerous illegal emigration attempts.

I understand extraditing all of the illegal n00bs though.  We need to booby trap the Messican border, and especially the Canadian border as well.

I would think that means even ones who have been here awhile.  If they are illegal they get sent back.  We shall see.

so..cuba is saying..that their country or mexico is such a bad place to live, that the people have to make dangerous emigration attempts..so its our fault....lol

i think the whole \'send ALL the illegal immigrants back" is impossible. you cant nab them all..maybe they can be more strict or whatever..but people in desperation will find a way.

i dunno if i missed it, but what are they going to do besides sending them back and releasing them?

immigrants, illegal immigration.

What is there not to hate?  They are a burden to our society.  Some may argue that they provide cheap labor, but with this their children get free education and healthcare.  In addition they do not pay taxes for any of this and send most of their money back to Mexico or wherever they came from.  Who pays for their childrens free healthcare and education?  We do.

This country is not the "horn o plenty" as some of you socialists would like to believe.  We are not responsible for giving free handouts and jobs just because pedro lives in a piss poor country and wants a better life.  Sorry, not our problem.  Also, most don\'t speak English and don\'t bother learning because we haven\'t adopted an official language, which in turn leads to more tax money being spent to print documents and signs in their language.

And DH, if you love immigrants and illegal immigration why don\'t you immigrate somewhere else yourself.

An illegal with two kids just got married into my family.

My cousin married him. My aunt fought with her until she signed a pre-nup, at least.
