After the first few rooms, and a little remote experimentation, it\'s easy to move Samus around the environments. The analog moves Samus forward and back, strafes left and right and is used for the very cool grapple beam. One of the triggers transforms her into Morph Ball mode. Yet what makes Corruption tick is the motion sensitivity. The remote controls where Samus aims and looks, similar to a mouse on a PC FPS. The main difference is that the controller is not tied directly to the camera all of the time. Only when the aiming target is moved near the edge of the screen does the view rotate; otherwise, it aims the arm cannon around the screen. The accuracy is very precise, but large arm motions are unnecessary. At the sensitivity set on the demo units (the remote\'s sensitivity can be adjusted in the options, as on all Wii games) only small wrist movements are needed. Once learned, which takes only moments, the style easily out does the current dual analog control. It was usually easier to manually aim at a character than use the familiar lock-on feature. The game looks great and was probably the best example of what Wii can do graphically. The charge beam in particular was stunning. Missiles now leave a gorgeous trail of smoke, and a frantic boss battle with Ridley while falling through a monstrous pit showed some spectacular effects. But the interactivity in Corruption set it apart. The grapple beam is activated by flicking the entire analog controller forward, which can be used to pull armor off of enemies or move impeding objects. In one area, players unlock a door by pressing A to grab a handle and then pull the handle out, twist it, and push it back in, all by performing the same motions with the remote, with Samus\'s arm matching your real-life motions on screen.
Impressions from Nintendojo point to the Wii controller being more effective than a standard pad. Its effectiveness would also allow developers to increase the speed at which enemies appear in an FPS. Not so hokey after all, even if only for the wildly unpopular, niche FPS genre. ;] -Dan
