Wii controller
« on: May 12, 2006, 06:38:34 PM »
I ve been thinking lately about the controller and I am wandering if it indeed was a good idea..

I get the impression that most developers wont use the controller well and some genres won\'t work with it efficiently.

For example I love games like Viewtiful Joe, good third person action games, strategic RPG battle systems etc.

But how well will the controller work to offer me a variety of different gaming experiences in each genre which is something I got with the standard controller?

Viewtiful Joe\'s speed and combos seem impossible with the Wii controller. You cant be as fast, you cant do a series of super combos, you cant force the wii controller to act in slow motion, and a scrolling action game doesnt seem to fit with a controller that is handled like you are playing something from a third person experience.

Generally most third person games will find a hard time with it I think. Some things your character could do with normal controls might be sacrificed or not work well with the Wii controller. So I think one side of the coin says the controller gives freedom to try new ideas but the other side says it could also be restrictive in other things

Add the fact that physics, graphics and AI will be near current gen quality and I wonder if the experience will be as convinving and entertaining.

What are your thoughts?

The problem with you mm is that you dont elaborate on your thoughts. You post one line comments that could mean many things when I am sure you ve got more in you mind that are directed to one thing. Its just that you are bored to express your opinions in detail often giving the impression that you are just complaining. :p
 Am I right? hehe

mm is a cynical old bastard.  Thats why we love him.

As for the controller,  despite its potential, I have this sinking feeling that although some developers will be able to put out some new and innovative titles most will fall into the *sigh* gimmick category.  I really REALLY hate agreeing with mm.

Hey I need confirmation each time. I dont know when you use a one liner just to complain and when you use a one liner because you are bored to go into detail :p

It will be like every other Nintendo console - perfect for first party titles and lacking in other titles. If you don\'t have a problem with that (me), then it\'s great. If you want strong third party support, go elsewhere.

I don\'t think mm has been right about anything console related in the entire time I have been on this site.

I used to think the DS second touch screen was just a total gimmick. Took them nearly a year for that to change.

I\'ll give them the benefit of a doubt this time.

True. But the difference between Wii and DS is that the DS retained the original playbility and then advanced it with the second touch screen. This is important because it didnt sacrifice anything. It only improved

Also hardware(AI physics) differences between PSP and DS are less eminent to gameplay. Almost nonexistent if not totally.

Apart from the price, PS3 might represent more the DS than Wii does plus a PSP with its extra functions. DualShock3 has the original controlling layout plus tilling. Wii might represent a stripped down DS with only one touch screen and as the only way to control a game.

Wii\'s controller is trying to change gaming completely and start from zero. Its trying to compete with 360 and PS3 which will have an advanced AI and physics while Wii will remain almost static in these aspects.

I dont know if Nintendo\'s controller will make the experience more engaging than what AI and physics will do for the PS3 and 360.

Wii is a bigger challenge for Nintendo I think.

Maybe you forgot the nunchuk with the analogue stick ?

Also, since the console is so cheap, price won\'t be an obstacle
to get an extra Wii dual stick controlpad.

Slowmotion move ? Just assign a button as slowmotion and every
move you make is in slowmo - tap the button again and you\'re back at
regular speed.

3rd person games ? Movement with the nunchuk analogue stick jump/duck with
restriction on X & Z axis.

Besides, going by gamers\' reactions in PAL regions ; the Wii will be a complete succes.

No I didnt forget the nunchuk.

Isnt the wii dual stick controlpad mainly for the virtual console games? It wont change anything for Wii specific games.

What I was trying to say with Slowmotion is that that even if you slomotion everything else on screen you cant force your own movement to slowdown. It will feel as if there is lag between your motion and the game.

3rd person games: That means I should have the controller in a certain horizontal position at almost all times. That suggestion also reduces emphasis on the motion sensing. It only replaces jump and duck, which could have been just two buttons with pressure points. Makes the controller sound more like a gimmick.

I suggest you watch the Red Steel gameplay footage : at one point the player is opposed to a handfull of baddies - the game goes into slowmo (wether scripted or player triggered) - the player locks in on is targets in realtime normal speed.

3rd person games : like i said ; any movement could have the movement of specified axis locked. For example, the game could regulate movement only to be influential on the vertical Y axis.

But thats what I am saying. In Viewtiful Joe the character is also slow motioned. And he is slowmotioned too deliberately because puting everything in slowmotion isnt there just to make you more destructive. Its there to change a tactic that still needs skill thats why Viewtiful is slowmotioned too.
In Red Steel the main character is never slowmotioned because it would give a feeling of lag between input and character. It can only serve as an extra effect or to make you more destructive.

Wouldnt this restrtict the motion sensing controller even more?

Also isnt the motion sensing best suited for 3rd person games were the camera remains at the back of the character? I dont know how a game like DMC where the camera is set independedly and uses a gameplay mechanic that has 3D controls with 2D style combos will work with Wii as efficiently as a standard controller.

Also I believe your idea makes the wii controller look more like....Dual Shock3\'s tilt feature

I feel that the Wii controller might be restrictive for many traditional styles than expand them.

I know I could be prooven wrong at the end but these thoughts are bugging me

Btw Blade: If I use this controller with RS wouldnt it be kind of confusing and funny holding the controller with two hands trying to move my character and slash with my Katana/shoot at the same time? :p
