Probably to force tech heads to throw another $100 their way. The thing is, the lack of an HDMI port has nothing to do with gameplay. The video game console is not affected one way or another. If you want higher potential resolution output, you throw down another $100.

They\'re offering two skus, for better or worse, and that\'s the main question that the consumer is faced with when selecting between them.

They should have released the fully-loaded console only, for $550, if you ask me. Or just bit the bullet and stuck with $500 which, when compared to the X360 doesn\'t seem too bad.

Thing is that they\'re already making you pay for a blu-ray player, so why make it (possibly) crippled?

Yes, the PS3 is more expensive than other consoles, but it\'s because there\'s a blu-ray player in it.  hi-def movie playback!  wow, what a bargain...but it only works with movies made before 2010...and no, you can\'t do anything about it but buy a compliant player = crippled, imho.  (that is if ICT is ever implemented)

what\'s your definition?

It works so it\'s not crippled.

You\'re suggesting that 4 years from now, it may be... what, incapable of the highest resolution on the cheaper sku?

I\'m suggesting, "so what?"

It\'s a non-factor.

gonna break it down for you...

Sony is charging you at the very least $500.  Their justification is that it\'s a bargain as a blu-ray movie player.  If ICT is implemented then the reason it\'s so expensive just became null.  Now you\'re just paying for Sony\'s forced blu-ray tech.  Thanks for footing the bill while we try to establish blu-ray (which, imo, is totally unnecessary).

I\'m just ranting.  Why have the consumer take the gamble on the cheaper PS3?  Why would Sony cut out HDMI on one of the models?  It\'s just dumb, imo.

I still think these new formats are too early.

the games were never a problem.  it\'s the movies.

So what will the $499 peeps do when 2010 rolls around and their new favorite movie OMG-I-MUST-OWN-IT comes out?  So much for future proof.  Oh well, enjoy it while you can.

So? Its a problem only for a 10 year old cheaper version of a PS3( thats what sony ment by futureproof anyways=it will last for 10 years than just 5.). By 2010 costs will be lower and all PS3\'s might be sold with an HDMI. Also PS3\'s will all be much cheaper by then and will be able to do much more than just play movies so even then people will see value for the "core" PS3.

These news are great especially for an early adopter who is going to buy the cheaper one in November 2006. He will be using it for 10 years without a problem which is a long time.

The reason why is money. Don\'t think about why do they charge less for taking out HDMI. The real answer is this: they think they can charge more if they include HDMI.

They lose money either way, so by saying "look what you get for an extra hundred" they can squeeze another Benjamin from tech-happy consumers.

EDIT: Unicron, check your math, it\'s not 2000 anymore. We\'re up to 2006 already. Almost 2007 by the time holiday season and PS3 launch rolls around.

You people forgets the 60 GB, memory card slots, wi-fi, and another gadget beside HDMI that bring the cost up an extra $100.

I think this is the first time ever that I\'m agreeing with Unicron. We\'re forgetting that consoles change. They changed the PS2 numerous times and updated the hardware and software to make it better. I assume they are gonna do the same thing with this console. Who knows, they may even do away with the core system in a few years when the price drops and its cheaper to manufacture them.

I\'m just gonna bite the bullet and buy the premium console. I may not use everything but atleast I\'m prepared so then I don\'t have to buy the extras to make a core into a premium status console (wireless, bigger harddrive) and spend more. Or even eventually selling my core system to buy a premium when the price drops. Nah, I\'ll play it safe.

I agree with others, they should just sell the premium. You get what, HDMI (whihc the tv i\'m buying has the jacks so woot for me) and wireless (I\'m using a wireless network next year so double woot for me). For me, the premium will be worthwile.

True,  there should be just 1 version,  the premium version,  but if you look at it 75% of the people who get the PS3 don\'t know what WIFI or HDMI is and will never need those options anytime in the near future (4-6 years.(

They should have released only the premium system with a 20GB HD and sell it at $550 as Eiksirf suggested.  If you want more HDD space addon HDDs should be available.

But as it stands,  I see the $500 PS3 model being the most produced of the 2 models,  reason being that alot of people won\'t need HDMI or WIFI.  The memory card slots hurt, though.  Dumb move by Sony.  If they would have included the memory card slots in the core version it wouldnt be that bad.  Now backwards compatibility is built in it for no real reason.

Wait, what memory cards are being included in the premium that\'s not in the core? The PS1 and PS2 memory cards or are they talking compact flash and SD? If they mean those media cards, then you don\'t need them. Its probably only used for pictures and such.

i\'m kinda confused on that part as well...if there are no traditional memory cards,..are we going to be using the hd for all of our game saves?...

This link said ICT won\'t be set til 2012...

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=17211

so my guess could be right that ICT won\'t ever be implement at all.
