how to add to the FPS genre?

add "encounters" instead of the traditional "run and gun"
force the player to have to figure out how to progress without shooting your gun

i.e. half life 2, and especially half life 2 episode 1.

Half Life 2 was good (not sure about this episode 1 part?), I never did finish it tho\'.

The FPS genre as of late has been NOTHING but throw enemy in front, let player shoot. Of course they add the newest graphic details, make the weapons abit different. Just like it use to be a big deal when they added those god forsaken driving levels in the middle of the game. It\'s just old. Not even Eik\'s suggest for the Wii-mote would help the genre, it\'s still the same ole\' thing.

As for the comment about not liking FPS, not true. I loved FPS...In the 90\'s..

but how is any existing genre different?

they\'re all different looking characters against different looking enemies running thru different looking levels.

hell, even puzzle games are stagnant.

and no, a gimmick controller is not the answer

Most current genres do bore me, personally. They\'re either stale or they at least appear that way.

I\'m all for innovation or being different. I was psyched for Pikmin and the first Monkey Ball. The first Wario Ware. I loved the demos of Indigo Prophecy and Shadows of the Colossus. And even though I never looked into it, I bet Katamari would have been a good cause. I even picked up my first DDR mat.

The DS has most consistently kicked developers\' retread habits and it was its "gimmick controller" that inspired a lot of the innovation.

You can latch onto the "gimmick" wagon all day long, but until we see what developers do with it, your guess is as good as mine. Or, worse. ;]

I couldn\'t of said it better. At least with the "gimmick" controller, developers are faced with the ability to do something different. As you mentioned, the DS  is a perfect example of this. The Wii may end up with the least amount of third party support, but I feel that the third party games that do arrive, for the most part, should be something special. -shrugs-

Wrong. Try again. I still enjoy plenty of games.

Alright, but then there are just different strokes for different folks. To me I can still have fun with a 1st person shooter, and so can 10\'s of millions of other gamers.

From what I read I think Resistance will be a much better game then you feel it will, but then again what might be new and cool for me will probably be old hat for you. You\'ve overplayed 1st person shooters and they do little for you, you have burnt yourself out on them. Sure one might come along that will finally re-spark your interest, but overall the majority of 1st person shooters and games in general are never going to live up to your expectations. They will bring lots of fun to manyh other gamers, and that\'s all that counts for those persons.

For me, I find 1st person shooters to be mostly cookie cutter probducts, but I really don\'t expect to many huge genre defining changes in a 1st person shooter. What I expect from a 1st person shooter is a 1st person shooter, and the ones I do play are usually ones that just prove to be fun to play. I\'ll get Resistance at launch primarily based upon Insomniac merit as a Dev i am willing to support, knowing they will try to bring some interesting twists to their game.

this is pretty much the way I see it. There is very little room for re-defining many genere\'s.

and many games that try to re-define or create a new genre don\'t do well and drag an entire company under with them.

There is no denying games have become stagnant, but many games still deliver great experiences.

Myself, I don\'t play nearly as many games as the rest of you\'s, but the games I do play are usually high on most everyones list. I don\'t have many crappy gaming experiences.

Other genres can get away with this. Take for example the racing genre, all they do is add new tracks, better graphics and better physics - it helps the game. A solid platforming game, all it really needs is decent puzzles and great platforming sections and it\'ll do fine. However, with the FPS you are yet another faceless solider fightin\' against aliens or maybe your in WWII, either way, it\'s just all the same. Some genres can get away with it and some can\'t.

Oh and get off the \'gimmick\' bandwagon, please. No one mentioned the Wii-mote, infact, I said that it wouldn\'t help the FPS genre.

I like the collecting charisma or fame mode in the game, if you gain certain heroic points, more soldiers will come to your aid.I hope we can give simple commands like "cover this area" while i search for the key or something.

What set this game apart from other ps2 FPS games is the war against aliens theme. We have many infact too many clones of realistic war FPS,i think a lot of people are getting bored with the same old story.

Anyway , the bad guy with machine guns, those are soldiers captured and had their genes deviated by the aliens.
