Xbox 360 Prey VS PC Prey

The PC version has been capped at a smooth 60 FPS, while the Xbox 360 version will run at a steady 30 FPS, and the single-player game is, with the exception of a few down-sampled textures here and there, gorgeous. Also, it\'s the exact same content on both systems. Built on the Doom 3 engine, both versions, from what we saw, are running smoothly, fast, and beautifully.

What a kick in the nutz for the Xbox 360. From what is supposed to be a machine as powerful as the latest PC\'s it sure is having trouble getting many of its games up to 60 frames per second.

I wasn\'t overly excited for Prey to begin with, since its just another 1st person shooter, but this news bothers me. there have been lots of framerate issues in Xbxo 360 games. not all games have problems but most of them stutter.

Burnout is the only Xbox game I have that runs at a smooth 60 FPS. PGR3 runs at 30 FPS and has occasional frame drops when there are a few cars on screen and smoke effects. Oblivion constantly flutters, and I believe COD2 on Xbox 360 is running at 30 FPS as well. I might be wrong about COD2, but it never seemed fast and smooth to me.

It came out last November. It\'s powerful, but I don\'t (personally) think anyone expects it to keep up with constantly evolving, high-end PCs.

Perhaps in November it was already behind the curve, but that\'s the way it goes with PC architecture.

Bah. That\'s bullshit. It should be able to do that in 60 fps and if not - then it\'s a piece of shit.

but aren\'t we at a stage now where 60 fps shouldn\'t be an issue? like darryl stated i remember alot of the xbox games bein 30 fps....even if the developer isn\'t tryin that hard, 60 fps shouldn\'t be an issue for the 360 or ps3...

60 or 30 fps is irrelevant to what console generation we\'re in. It\'s a simple matter of developer\'s choice. They can either go for a somewhat smooth 30fps and more action on screen (for instance: lighting and stuff)  compared to other games of that generation or go with 60 fps and a little less good looking graphics compared to other games that generation. The only time this debate will really stop is when computers have become so fast graphics can\'t evolve any further.

I\'m pretty sure any excuses generated here will not affect the trend. ;]

Do you remember Ninja Gaiden?  One of the best looking games of this past generation.  Solid 60 fps.  Same with Dead or Alive 3 and Ultimate.

Totally depends on the developer\'s effort.

I dunno how you\'re supposed to display 60 fps on an NTSC television set that can only display 30 interlaced fps as a standard. I guess with the progressive standards available in the XB360, it should become possible, but maybe it would then not be backwards compatible with standards televisions?

If anyone cares to explain, please go ahead.

Its easy to make a fighting game running at 60 FPS, but for a sandbox type of game, its pretty tough.

Is the latest Onimusha running at 60 FPS? Has anyone played that game?

Ninja Gaiden is not a fighting game.

Does a sandbox type game need to be 60 fps?  I think they\'re resources could be spent far better elsewhere.

NTSC is actually 60 interlaced frames per second, not 30 interlaced frames per second.   30 interlaced frames per second have the same bandwidth of 15 progressive frames per second...just to clarify that...

60 progressive frames per second is much better than 60 interlaced frames per second.  I doubt it has anything to do with backward compatible to NTSC TV, since in videogame you can output any type of resolution, frame rate, and color depth like how you do it on the PC games, but that\'s up to the developer to decide.

Or the method of upconverting or downconverting works too.
