E3 - Finished, as we know it!!!

The Scoop

The Gist:

Big companies are not getting a return for their millions of dollars spent at E3, and as such, it will be a smaller venue in the future.  Other current small and new small shows will have to take up the slack.

Once E3 made a dress code for booth babes, I lost interest.

There is a dress code at SEMA, but you can\'t really tell.

One one hand, I want to say this is a shame, but if it means publishers will have a million or two more in their bank accounts, it might be healthier for the industry. What we saw at E3 could be generated through a few press releases, images and videos. I think the footage is what\'s missing from the rest of the year\'s reporting.

More media dates to get more hands-on impressions out there would be another good thing.

some shitty publisher says "look, my dick is bigger at E3!"
some other shitty publisher says "look, my dick is shinier at E3!"
yet another shitter publisher says "look, we spent a gazillion dollars and our floor area is the largest at E3!"

all for countless lame console!!!!!!!!\'s to chat about in stupid intarweb forums and claim thier console "won" (this one not excluded).

i give spike TV\'s video game award show more credibility.

I always wanted to attend E3 simply for the free swag and booth babes..-shrugs-

Other than that, E3 is useless. I would rather each big publisher to have their own event, like Nintendo\'s old Spaceworld.

This will give more breathing room for small talented developers and shift the focus off the US.

I hope it\'ll lead to more diverse games having a commercial chance, from all continents.

I will be at SIGGRAPH this week. I wonder if any of the game developers there will have anything to say about this.

^ A sigh of relief because they now know they won\'t really be having to spend time and money anymore for E3 demos, booth reservations etc.

TGS, GC Leipzig and such events will benefit from this as well.

Quite sad news, I will miss staying up to 4-5 in the morning checking for E3 news and watching press conferences.

I have been listening to different podcasts from game press, RadiOPM, EGM etc. and they seem quite happy that things are going to be toned down. They were quite pissed of when people who had no business being at E3 got in just to play the latest games. Which in return affected the play time the “real” journos had with each game and the coverage we got of the show.

So if its being downsized with less people attending (invite only?) and better news coverage, I’m quite pleased. Maybe we\'ll get more in depth impressions from each game, and no more SHAKY CAM VIDS. ;P

Still I will miss all the excitement and bling-bling from the show. :)
