Microsoft\'s latest patch causes hardware to die in certain 360s.  Although the number is small, they are working with customers individually to resolve the issue.  By working with, of course, I mean charging $139 USD to fix it.

Brilliant, they get money for the console, break it with a patch, then charge again to fix it.  If they hit only 5% of their customers with each quarterly patch, no one person need get hit twice (and thus get super pissed) and they can collect an extra 50% revenue (compared to purchase sales) over 5 years.

Yep, like I said.. veeeeery wily of Microsoft to keep this patch only affecting a minority (I mean really, what legitimately could cause \'dead consoles\' to a minority of homogeneous consoles).

I should have remembered never to do a quick estimate with numbers.  Upon calculating it properly (remember, I\'m talking income to MS, which is based on their sale price of consoles to stores of 359 and 455) it would take 6.41 to 8.12 years.  Must note that this is based on a failure rate guesstimate of 5% per quarterly patch.  Must note this is also based on the assumption that M$ is an evil company.

Anyway, this is bogus customer support by Microsoft. If my 360 craps out, I\'ll be pissed if I have to go through that hassle.

/me nods.  M$ and Sony are definitely earning their reps for bad/expensive customer support.  Sony will have a chance to improve their image with the PS3 launch.

Nintendo has always been great with CS, I had a gameboy color that crapped out, was past the warranty, but they replaced (with a refurbished) only for cost of shipping.
