Stereo System for my car or HDTV....
« on: November 26, 2006, 10:28:30 PM »
I cant decide.

The Stereo system will probably be around $1000, so i doubt id be able to get an HDTV along with that right now.

I have a \'96 chevy cavalier so i think a great stereo system would sound awesome..but im not really in my car for that long. Plus id finally have something in my car worth stealing, lol. Right now i just have the core speakers, er whatever the speakers are called that come with the car. But it kind of sounds like shit when it gets relatively loud.

HDTV: its HD..and i have a 360. But id have to get a 1080p set and the 360 games probably will never do 1080p games for whatever reason..and iv heard that playing 720p games on 1080p looks more grainy than normal. Not sure if that\'s true or not, just word of mouth from a friend. So i dont think there\'d really be any point in getting a set that can do 1080p when I wont use it for a while (not till a price drop or 2 in the ps3). But still 360 in HD would be nice..and football.

Im kind of leaning towards the stereo system but i think id get more out of the TV set..BUT i also think id be overpaying since by the time i consistently use 1080p, itll be a lot cheaper.

depends on what you like more.  If you are into sound, maybe car speakers.  If you are into picture, maybe hdtv.

I saved a grand at the dealership when I got my used car, so I spent it on a sound system. It\'s not hard to do if you want one good system in one shot. And that was without replacing the factory interior speakers.

i think i would go for the set...but that\'s just me..most stereos from the factory are decent now anyways. Anything more than the decent system from the factory, then that ass just needs to be up in the club.....go for the set...

I\'d get an HDTV without thinking twice.  Although I\'m going to wait to get one until next year sometime, when the cost of 1080p come down and become mainstream.

Now if I had a really long commute (which I don\'t) then I\'d have to consider the car stereo.

with the hdtv, you should to factor in the additional costs for HD service to run to your house.  I pay $125/mo for HD-DVR digital cable + cable internets.  With just the basic analog service (probably what you have now) + cable internet it would be about $82.

$1g on car sound is almost the bare minimum nowadays, the head unit I wanted was $999 alone but I couldn\'t afford it.

I would go HDTV.  You probably spend more time at home than you do in your car, and it would be a shame to play all those new next-gen games on a standard interlaced TV.  I\'d nab this.

If you\'re set on a car system lmk and I\'ll throw out some favorite brands.  I have a contact in New Jersey that can you get you top-notch stuff (brands you can\'t get at Best Buy or Circuit City) for a discount.

I personally would go for car stereo. I\'m in my car a bit so that would be why, lol. 2 hours drive home from my college and all i have on the boring ride is music so good sounding music is a must for me. Also, 1000 bucks could buy me a nice system and those things don\'t seem to be coming down in price, if anything more expensive for good car systems. HDTVs seem to be gradually coming down in price  so when i save up another grand, i can get a sick TV.

I couldn\'t possibly see how you could pick the car stereo over the HDTV.  Hell I probably drive more than I watch TV and I\'d still pick the HDTV in a second\'s thought.

thats why im debating. But like i already said, im not getting a ps3 for a LONG time, and the 360 doesnt use 1080p...and if im getting an HDTV its obviously going to be 1080p..BUT but by the time i use 1080p and actually use all the tv\'s capabilities, itll be way cheaper. So maybe holding off on the HDTV for a while is smarter.

still not decided

i actually already have an HD cable box, lol. My brother had an HDTV and left and my dad decided to keep the box since we get some extra channels in the package and ends up being cheaper. Whenever I move out is a different story but i have no idea when that would be.

i really havent looked around too much but this one stood out to me. http://www.pricegrabber.com/p__Samsung_HL_S5087W_50_DLP_Projection_TV,__19063796

Well how fast will you be able to replenish funds?  Thats what it comes down to.  If you think you can buy a car stereo and then turn around and get an hdtv when you feel its most useful then go for it.

I just could never spend that much on a stereo in the first place, music is music in my eyes.

For around that cost, i think Sony SXRD is better since it uses 3 LCOS panels to project 1080p into the 50" screen while I think that DLP only uses 1 Chip to project 1080p into the 50" screen...and 1 chip might shows some rainbow effects which if someone see it, it might bothers them.  So, maybe going for 3 LCOS panels is better.  Picture quality wise, I think in term of contrast ratio and picture detail, both should give quite a close result...but I am still leaning toward the SXRD simply because of the 3 panels for each red, green, and blue color...
