Comics fans, please recommend some good storylines

Found you can buy an entire series of comics for fairly cheap once after it\'s been out for a while.  Example:

http://www.amazon.com/Marvel-Zombies-TPB-Robert-Kirkman/dp/0785120149/sr=8-2/qid=1166287715/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-8707382-7867809?ie=UTF8&s=books

Here\'s some I read:

- House of M (Magneto\'s daughter creates a "fake" world where Magneto is the leader)
- Origin (Wolverine\'s past)
- Planet Hulk: Prelude

Any others?

not really a series but The Killing Joke has always been my favourite.

Watchmen
Kingdom Come
Batman The Dark Knight Returns

Those are the 3 must read series of the medium. If you do not read them a small  South American girl will get raped.
Who is this anamoly we call Jumpman? How is he able to do what he does and still survive after years of torment? It seems he feeds on the hate, growing with an intense passion to put unassuming members in their place.

- Age of Apocolypse (x-men)

- If you find Hulk 100 (annual) that\'s a pretty good read, it also has the reprint of hulk *the end* which i thought was good...the whole planet hulk series has been an excellent read for me, i never collected the hulk until that storyline...

_ i\'m still seeing old copies of the civil war series lying around, pick those up if you haven\'t already...

-there was really a good series with the new xmen about a year ago when magneto killed the phoenix, then wolverine killed magneto, then the world transformed again,...something like an age of apocolypse, but with the beast as the major bad guy..sylvestri did the art so that\'s a plus too...

These are called trade paperbacks or graphic novels.  I guess it depends if you\'re looking for a good story out of a series or a story contained within itself.  Here\'s a few I highly recommend:

Superman: Red Son
Astonishing X-Men: Gifted
Y The Last Man: Unmanned
DC: The New Frontier 1  2
Daredevil: Underboss
DMZ: On the Ground
Fables: Legends in Exile
Green Arrow: Quiver
JLA: Tower of Babel
Kingdom Come
Powers: Who Killed Retro Girl
Supreme Power: Contact
WE3
Superman Secret Identity
Sleeper: Out in the Cold

Some are jumping on points to the series while others are self contained.  Regardless, they\'re ALL good reads in their own way.  They span tights stuff and more real world stories as well.  Good luck. :)

- just remembered a couple mo\'... the onslaught series was a good storyline as well, it kinda crossed into other marvel books, but i soley just stuck with the x-men when it was out.

- this next one is very recent and isn\'t very old at all but i think it\'s going to be a very good read..it\'s called spider-man "reign" it\'s a future look at spidey in his senior citizen years, i\'ve read the 1st issue and was highly impressed with it...

the onslaught series is what prompted me to start looking, read something about the old series on IGN.  Thing is, each graphic novel for the series is $50+ 0_o

I\'m half way through J2 (son of Juggernaut).  I have to read Hulk Visionaries Vol 2 & Death of Superman before I move onto the other suggestions.

i\'ll prolly do marvel zombies & red son next

I recommend Cerebus by Dave Sim.  The original issues were reprinted in in multiple trade sized paperbacks.  Pretty cool stuff.
