Racism online?..

i just saw this thread over at gamespot...i don\'t go online so i wouldn\'t be familiar, but for those that do, is it really as bad as this thread states? It\'s a pretty big thread, but if you go thru the first page or two you can get an idea of what they are talking about....

More often than racism, it\'s young kids using racial slurs because young kids are obnoxious brats who like to go out of their way to get under the skin of anyone older than them, and sometimes people the same age. And it\'s not just offensive to whatever race, these kids and their obnoxious squeaking will offend anyone with ears.
 
Having said that, game experience may change when playing online, etc etc.
 
The trick is to play kid-free games. Texas Hold Em can be mature sometimes. I had a real love for Tetris Worlds on the original Xbox, too.

The most popular racial slurs that I see in the PC online gaming community is "NIGGER" and "JEW" specifically directed at the person if they are white. In other words it\'s meant to be the ultimate insult towards the white person when you label them as a black person. Simply put your a calling the white man a worthless piece of shit. (remember I am only relaying the message , I do not in any way agree with this)

I just skim through page 1 and a bit of page 2 and i feel tired reading the rest of it.  Boring, lame.  White people acts like they are "better" by saying oh looks black people called me "cracker" and the "n" words, and they say white people aren\'t offended.  Then they say heh, but black people gets offended when white people use racial slurs on them...blah, blah and blah....maybe both are fake...

I\'ve encountered racism on PS2 online. Usually people just make slurs back and forth in like a joking manner. I dunno.

EDIT: I did a search for the word nigger on wikipedia not too long ago. It wasn\'t considered offensive until after the Civil Rights Movement. Don\'t believe me, look it up. But I don\'t understand why black people can use nigger all they want but once someone else uses it, its suddenly offensive. If they want to help stop racism, maybe they should stop using the word to describe themselves. I don\'t see any other race use a slur to describe themselves. It just seems like a double standard to me. Just my opinion though. But then again, I can get politically correct, lol. I do find the history of the word very interesting. It was derived from the latin word niger which meant simply black and it just started to morph into its current meaning. I find it interesting that it was never derogatory until the civil rights era. Funny how meanings of words change. Gay, queer and fag all changed meanings throughout the ages, especially during the century. Its weird to think what words we use freely today will be taboo 50 years from now.

for instance, if say you don\'t know that person, and that person didn\'t do anything to you, all of a sudden.  You disrespect that person by calling racial slurs.  it doesn\'t matter if you are kidding or mean it, that person might took it the wrong way and get offended...and you should called that person slurs if that person disrespect you first, but only call slurs to that individual that did something mean to you...not to the entire race...otherwise, you are asking for trouble...

i don\'t frequent those boards, i already knew that it\'s full of young people that are extremely ignorant. i just wanted to know if anybody here experienced any of that stuff when they went online.

Gotta love teenagers *sigh* I hate playing with them sometimes online. They say some stupid shit and talk shit when they kill you. I always say "congratulations you little douche. You prove to me that you have so little of a life that you have to make up for your lack of a penis by beating someone who works, goes to school and makes something of his life." Said something like that to a couple little punks and it shuts them up

If people took what everyone says online with a grain of salt it wouldn\'t be that big of a deal.  I\'m not condoning racism, but you just have to not get worked up over it.  I\'ve experienced it on PC and Live, pretty much equally.  

I couldn\'t begin to count how many times I\'ve had people on Live put on their best "white" voice or use some slur against me playing college football, didn\'t change my day.

Some people take video games WAY too seriously. They do it to piss the person off, that\'s all. When a person is pissed, they don\'t play with their A game and its easier to beat them. Once your mind is occupied by the ignorant asshole, it isn\'t focused on the game, so mistakes are easier to make. I know I suck at games when my mind is occupied by something else. But when I\'m focused, I can do anything in a game.
