PS3 to upgrade to 80gb?

Doesn\'t say anything about a price increase. I know they aren\'t making 20GB units for EU. Perhaps they\'re dropping the 20GB and 60 GB altogether and swithing to just making it 80GB. OR....make the 80GB the $499 version and make a 120GB the $599 version.

Quote
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is planning a new version of the PlayStation 3 game console with a higher-capacity hard-disk drive, according to a U.S. regulatory filing made by the company.

The filing to the U.S.        Federal Communications Commission was made earlier this month to notify the FCC of a change to the game console\'s Bluetooth module. The FCC is the radio regulator in the U.S. and as such all new products that use radio or changes to these products must be submitted to the organization for approval before they can be sold.

Included in the filing\'s cover letter is notification of the new model: "The model CECHE01 to be added by the difference of the capacity of hard disk." It then says the new model will have an 80G-byte drive.

Sony currently sells two versions of the PlayStation 3. The cheaper model has a 20G-byte drive and the more expensive model has a 60G-byte drive.

Hard-disk storage technology is advancing all the time and higher capacity drives are regularly coming available. As better drives come on the market drive makers cut the price of drives or discontinue then altogether because they become uncompetitive against newer models.

Thus the new PlayStation 3 could be an evolution of the product forced by economics of the disk-drive industry or something more important in Sony\'s strategy.

A spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment in Tokyo declined to comment on the company\'s plans for future upgrades to the PlayStation 3.

On Wednesday Microsoft Corp. announced plans for a new version of the competing        Xbox 360 console. The Xbox 360 Elite packs a 120G-byte drive-- against 20G bytes on existing machines-- and an HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) connection not offered on current models.

This sounds so stupid.  60GB to 80GB?  What a worthless change.  PS3 owners can upgrade to a 120GB HDD for well under $100 if they see the need.  True,  I am down to 27GB myself but that is after installing Linux (10GB), a dozen 500mb demos and countless 150mb trailers.  I hope this isn\'t some sort of knee jerk reaction to Microsoft\'s Elite Console.  But if there is no price change in the console and its just a slight upgrade of the HDD you can\'t really say this is bad for gamers.  20 more GB isn\'t enough to get me real upset at Sony for changing the specs so soonTivo?

The writing is on the wall that the 20GB model will soon be extinct everywhere.  If they are indeed going with 80GB then they need to drop both the 20 and 60GB models and produce just the 80GB.  But I\'m still upset.  This seems too much of typical Sony copycat.  They copy-cated Microsoft\'s ill advised core and premium,  now they are copycating upgrading the console months after launch.  This makes me sick.  What idiots come up with these ideas

I think the price will remain at $599 and Sony drops the 20 and 60gb players. Prices keep dropping every week for HDs. So it makes sense they upgrade to 80GB as a standard. Of course, this is speculation on my part.

Does anyone seriously need 80GB on a Playstation? I have 80 on my computer and I don\'t even use it all.

gmanjoe upgrading the HDD only isn\'t a bad thing.  But will it delay a price drop?

But there is part of me that says I could have waited a few months and got a 80GB HDD for the same price.  I feal cheated in a way but prices drop for HDDs so I really shouldnt I guess.

Titan,  the extra space could be for the new features in HOME.  Downloading movies, TV episodes, etc etc in HOME will take alot of space.  I wonder how 360 gamers manage all those downloads off of Xbox Live with just 13GB.  I know my PS3 had 55GB brand new and this new model will probably have 75GB out the box.

But I am down to 27GB.  Why?  10GB to Linux,  500MB demos, 200mb movie trailers,  alot of mp3s etc and I\'ve only had the PS3 for 3 months.  I\'m sure that 27GB will shrink real quick when HOME is launched.  HOME itself is said to be around 500Mb but I\'m talking about the downloadable extras, movies, tv episodes etc etc.

Another thing that takes up space..ripping DVDs to your PS3\'s HD around 4-7GB per movie

Why would I use my Playstation for that when I can do the same shit on my computer?

Obviously,  it seems you would prefer to download movies,  TV episdoes etc to your PC

As for me,  I think the experience will be much better on the PS3 for 2 major reasons

- PS3 hooks to your big screen TV (not a 15" PC monitor)
- PS3 is less complicated then a PC and turns on and off in 5 seconds while a PC takes a minute or two

True,  a PC can hook to most TVs,  but a huge PC/keyboard/mouse is out of place in a home theater setting.

If the PS3 internent browser gets updated some more and they fix some of it\'s problems then I (after HOME) will have no reason to use my PC,  except for ITUNES music downloads and PC games.

For example,  if I wanted to watch a downloaded TV episode,  it would take me about 5 minutes to get it loaded up and viewable on my 15" monitor.  But if I had the same episode on my PS3 I could get to it in 15 seconds.

That\'s me though.  Others may still prefer to use thier PC.  I just see the PS3 as a smaller,  faster alternative.

1) my laptop can plug into a TV so its not a big deal to me
2) I really don\'t see how the PS3 will be faster downloading a TV show when I\'m using the same speed connection
3) the monitor on my laptop is kickass

Sony and Microsoft are half retarded this week.

If they want to keep up with Nintendo, they need to market a new game aggressively. They do not need to increase the harddrive.

This sounds so stupid.  60GB to 80GB?  What a worthless change.

Ehm... the \'correct\'  rumour is that the 80GB version will replace the 20GB version and that a 250GB version will replace the 60GB version.

It\'s been said that Sony\'ll prefer to maintain pricepoint and offer the 250GB version for the price of the current 60GB version. That doesn\'t sound all that unlikely to me, especially in regards to what the 360 Elite has to offer...

Remember when everyone was saying how hdd was not needed for a console when the xbox first launched. Now these things are bigger and standard on consoles now.

This is the dumbest thing I\'ve ready in a while.

Where did you hear such a rediculous \'correct\' rumor?  Sony is fazing out the 20GB model entirely.  I highly doubt it will make a comeback with 80GB.  And 250GB for the upper-end model?  How insanely wasteful.  I dont anyone who could need or want to download that much.

Your \'correct\' rumor sounds like the nastiest rotten fish imagineable

I hope they continue selling the 60GB version if they do decide for a 80GBone,  with the difference that the 60GB would cost as much or less than the current 20GB version.

They will boost sales too that way
