10 reasons why PS3 will win this console generation

Eik, I\'m a bit surprised about your opinion on 2) and 3). I mean, free online > costing money. I know Live/Gold isn\'t super expensive, but I\'d rather have it for free.

But what I think is strange is how you think 3) is not important, given the reasons Hastings gave. I mean, he should know, and I think his reasons were quite compelling.

But that\'s just my 2 cents. :)

I hear ya. I just don\'t think Live is so expensive that it makes a difference. It\'s less than $5 a month and if you use it, the service is worth it. Free is better, I just don\'t think it\'s a system seller in this case. It didn\'t do the trick for PSP or Dreamcast (not sure about the DC\'s online plan, really). It\'s a plus, but not as big as this list makes it seem, in my opinion.

For the disc space.... I don\'t know, if your game is that ambitious, get a second DVD9 or what about when you need 100GB? Space is important, but I don\'t think it\'s a system seller either. There are ways around it, and none of the systems are lacking in storage space for what they offer, software-wise anyway. That\'s just my opinion.

The only thing that struck me was how he gave one possible explanation for the low number of levels in Gears. I think they just paid so much attention to graphics that they ran out of development time and lost a level or two (see early trailer to see how they cut an encounter with that major boss). But really, if it was a space thing, just put the last two levels on disc two. Not a big deal, right?

I really like your views to.

To me, the thing that isn\'t mentioned here is:

the hackabality: since you can run Linux and install apps on your PS3, tools that let you hack stuff, music, games, emu whatever, will make PS3 more attractive for a lot of people. (it doesn\'t necessarily include me ;) )

As for the Wii.. I don\'t think the "fad will fade". I simply think that game developers will find the ratio of game sold for the number of console available will be terrible if you compare to Ps3 and Xbox.. Let\'s say RE4. Since the crowd of owner is so wide and different, you cant expect all those 65y old bowling player to buy a copy.. while their might be 10 million Wii, maybe only 2-3 millions be interested in a RE game.. while on a PS3, maybe 50-60%

Old folks are the reason why Wii is scarce. Those retirees are using it as an exercise tool. It\'s fun and low impact and they\'ll probably buy one or two other games for the console\'s life time use (unless they give it to their grand kids).

I am still a bit concerned about PS3\'s RSX. Recent Lair pics show a 2007 build with a lesser polygon than the 2006 demonstration.

Recent multiplatform games also show the PS3 versions with less realtime light sources and lesser polygons than the XB360 versions. The Ati gpu with it\'s unified shader architecture truly shows it\'s power compared to RSX.

I dont know about Lair with less polys, but dont compare multi-platform games. Some game developers, like EA, wont try to make "a better product". They are just trying to hit the shelves with more games to boost their sales.

It all depends on much ressources a compagny is willing to put down. There are some recent mutil platform, like Oblivion that shows that PS3 can do very solid "ports".

^ Yeah, i realize what you\'re saying ; but the reality is that often, those games are pretty fun/good ; so one wants to play them anyway.

At the end of the day ... alot of devs won\'t give the PS3 version of those nice games the extra \' love \'  ; so then that becomes the standard situation where XB360 versions will often look a bit better/more fps. So, chances are, that only a handful of devs will go that far for their PS3 versions ; which in turn keeps the PS3 expertise quite small as well.
It is said to be that PS3\'s RSX has half of Xenos\' triangle setup ( polygon budget ) at best scenario.....

Recent Lair footage indicates yet again, that devs see themselves forced to cut into poly budgets when they need good framerates on their PS3 games. SplinterCell DA also saw the PS3 version with lesser polygons and less lightsources than the XB360 version.

Could that be the LOD in action?

I seriously doubt that. I checked the original screenshots for both ; both close ups.

i really do think, PS3\'s gpu is it\'s achilles heel, and Cell won\'t be able to magically pull alot more polygons by means of software triangle setup.

Nothing really complex going on in this shot. There\'s a wall with a door as background ; so it doesn\'t even need to draw a far distance.

We\'re not talking image quality here.

This is about what the overall polygon budgets are ; PS3 versus XB360. Polygon edges in a screenshot give a very good indication about the poly budget. No normal mapping or jpeg lossyness can cover that up.

We shouldn\'t even go into a discussion about which developer and how they do it, but what matters is the game endresult to consumer.

I\'m seeing PS3 games with conservative poly budgets again and again...

yes, that\'s a graphics criteria and thus it matters.
